Description

What would Newton see if he looked out his bedroom window? This book describes the world around the important mathematicians of the past, and explores the complex interaction between mathematics, mathematicians, and society. It takes the reader on a grand tour of history from the ancient Egyptians to the twentieth century to show how mathematicians and mathematics were affected by the outside world, and at the same time how the outside world was affected by mathematics and mathematicians. Part biography, part mathematics, and part history, this book provides the interested layperson the background to understand mathematics and the history of mathematics, and is suitable for supplemental reading in any history of mathematics course.

User’s Reviews

Editorial Reviews: Review This is a unique book that helps its readers put the major (and minor) events in the history of mathematics into the context of what else was happening in the world. Suzuki even shows us that many historical figures in mathematics were actors on a larger stage. Not only is the book a worthwhile read, but it will be a constant reference afterwards. –Victor Katz, Author of A History of Mathematics Book Description What would Newton see if he looked out his bedroom window? It can be used as a supplemental text to a history of mathematics course, or even as a stand-alone history text. About the Author Jeff Suzuki received his B.A. in mathematics and history from California State University. His previous publications include A History of Mathematics, A Brief History of Impossibility, Lagrange’s Proof of the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra, and The Lost Calculus: Tangency and Optimization Without Limits, for which he won the Carl B. ⭐Received book in excellent condition.

⭐Prior to writing this book, Jeff Suzuki wrote A History of Mathematics, published in 2002. The purpose of his Mathematics in Historical Context is to provide the historical, non-mathematical context for a study of the history of mathematics. It is a concise, clearly written synopsis of suitable portions (mostly political) of western and eastern history, and includes brief discussions of the mathematicians and mathematics of each period. Be forewarned. This is not another “History of Mathematics” even though it contains within it the outlines of such a history. As Suzuki says, it is “part mathematics, part mathematical biography, and part history.” (p. vii)Some readers are going to complain there isn’t enough mathematics in the book and others will complain that the historical contexts that are given are not rich enough in science, philosophy, social history, politics, or in some other topic. Certainly there is room for all of that in the idea of a book with a title like this has, but a more comprehensive history would be all that more lengthy, and no doubt there would then be those who’d complain the book was too long, overreaching, and contained more “context” than mathematics. Suzuki’s book is balanced and doesn’t lose sight of its purpose as a book for readers interested specifically in the history of mathematics. It supplements the more detailed mathematical histories and makes no pretense to being anything else.I haven’t seen his History of Mathematics, and so can’t compare the two books. Suzuki has a tight, clear, and precise style of writing. If his History is written in the same style, it’s likely to be first-rate.

⭐I only needed this book for school so I don’t have much to say. It has a lot of good info if you are into mathematics!
