Description

This textbook fits courses on mechanical behavior of materials in mechanical engineering and materials science and includes numerous examples and problems. It emphasizes quantitative problem solving. This text differs from others because the treatment of plasticity emphasizes the interrelationship of the flow, effective strain, and effective stress and their use in conjunction with yield criteria to solve problems. The treatment of defects is new, as is the analysis of particulate composites. Schmid’s law is generalized for complex stress states. Its use with strains allows for prediction of R-values for textures. Of note is the treatment of lattice rotations related to deformation textures. The chapter on fracture mechanics includes coverage of Gurney’s approach. Among the highlights in this new edition are the treatment of the effects of texture on properties and microstructure in Chapter 7, a new chapter (12) on discontinuous and inhomogeneous deformation, and the treatment of foams in Chapter 21.

User’s Reviews

Editorial Reviews: Book Description An expanded textbook for mechanical behavior of materials courses in mechanical and materials engineering that emphasizes quantitative problem solving. About the Author William Hosford is a Professor Emeritus of Materials Science at the University of Michigan. He is the author of numerous research publications, including Materials for Engineers, Metal Forming, 3rd Edition (with Robert M. Caddell), Materials Science: An Intermediate Text, Reporting Results (with David C. Van Aken), Mechanics of Crystals and Textured Polycrystals, and Physical Metallurgy.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Book was shipped in time and was great quality. Seems like it was never used before with no marks or tears or bends.

⭐If you are taking a class, it could be fine. But if you are reading it yourself without previous knowledge about the topics, be careful.

⭐Worst textbook ever. I have got thru the first two examples in the book and each contained errors. I can’t even imagine how many total there are in the book!

⭐This is by far the worst textbook I have ever used. It is absolutely full of glaringly obvious errors–several in every chapter. There are computational mistakes in example problems, unitless variables in exercises, mislabeled diagrams, you name it. On multiple occasions I have been stuck on a problem for quite some time until I realize that a symbol is misplaced in the equation I am trying to work with. Highly unrecommended.

⭐There are so many typos in this book, you can not find one page without something wrong. Lots of expression in the book is unclear.
