⭐The book is intended to be an introductory book to quantum field theory. I think this aim has beenbeautifully achieved by the author. The book covers some of most important parts of modern quantumfield theory ranging from traditional topics such as canonical quantisation,path integral, renormalisationto more modern emphasis on the concept of effective field theory, monopoles, instantons etc. The authorclaimed he wanted to write some thing similar to the old Mandl’s famous book published in1959, which tookthe author two short weeks to finish the whole book. However, the current book is much more involvedthan the old Mandl, so I think it would be fantastic if someone could master it in two months.In summary, this is a concise book, but contains a lot of insights that are not commonly found in other textbooks.This slim book is abundantly worth reading!
⭐I you studied quantum field theory (QFT) before for at least a year, you will find this book very useful. It is full of insights which are hard to find in many other books on QFT. However, I don’t believe this is a book for a graduate level introductory course on QFT, as the author (Prof. Thomas Banks) claims. I believe, it would be overwhelming to most students. As a motto, Prof. Banks provides very little details, leaving it to the student to fill the blanks.
⭐It’s a great book, the explanations are concise and clear. I especially like that by making the discussion as terse as possible, we are able to see the key points and not be lost in details. However, this book relies heavily (and justifiably) on group theory (especially representations of the Rotation Group, maybe even representations of Poincare Group etc..). If you had a graduate level Quantum Mechanics course, then I believe you’ll have that background, but otherwise, beware. I wish the author put more details in the appendix on Group theory prerequisite to make the discussion more self-contained.
⭐This book is a great reference book; however, there are a host of much better introductions to QFT.
⭐If you have a solid backgroud in QM you will love perusing this book before you go head on into Weinberg’s first QTF book. The experts have it right – it is a new way to study and review the core subject and leaving the practical calculations to a wonderful and doable set of problems. After your perusal is over you can find a quiet spot and start reading it in every minute detail… And then read Weinberg again!
