Description
One of the most distinguished critics and innovative authors of the twentieth century, Virginia Woolf published two novels before this collection appeared in 1921. However, it was these early stories that first earned her a reputation as a writer with “the liveliest imagination and most delicate style of her time.” Influenced by Joyce, Proust, and the theories of William James, Bergson, and Freud, she strove to write a new fiction that emphasized the continuous flow of consciousness, time’s passage as both a series of sequential moments and a longer flow of years and centuries, and the essential indefinability of character.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐I am giving this book 4 stars because, well because 3 stars would be unfair to Virginia. It took me halfway through to find the rhythm of this stream of consciousness writing. Once I did, I found the form, if not the content fascinating. Should you choose to read it and find it boring and/or confusing; continue on anyway. It is only about 80 pages and as I said the style is so interesting.
⭐A nice introduction to her world. I enjoyed all of the stories. A poetry in a prose. For those who like uncertainty, associations, peace and beauty in literature.
⭐A collection of stories, using stream of consciousness to tell a tale. Beautiful prose, but not for people who like a focused plot, involving a character moving towards a specific goal. I enjoyed it, because the prose was beautiful. One gets the impression Virginia Woolf was trying to explore different ways of writing, which don’t involve a focused plot. If you’re open to the idea of simply looking through a character’s eyes, following her thoughts on everything around her, everything it makes her think of, this collection of stories is for you.
⭐I appreciate the complexities that I find in the works of Virginia Woolf. Although difficult to understand the first time around sometimes, her words read like poetry. The collection of short stories here devote much attention to the smallest details, infusing them with a deeper meaning.
⭐I wanted to read these stories, but this file was incomplete and only had about 1/10 of the pages. This review has nothing to do with the author; I was disappointed with the product.
⭐The whole work of Virginia Woolf is profound . Through the lines is possible to discover more about V.W .Presently I am re-reading her works and again I found it EXCELLENT. All her writing gives the reader more information to understand better her complexity.
⭐A brilliant piece of writing, difficult to understand and full of symbolism. The language is beautiful and the book is exciting to read even though it’s talking about a very mundane affair of some women meeting occasionally for a tete a tet.
⭐As one who loves Virginia Woolf’s works, this collection was disappointing. Short stories are definitely not her genre. I will keep to reading her novels.
⭐I will be upfront and write that I am a huge admirer of Virginia Woolf so this review is going to be rather biased. Monday or Tuesday is a 1921 short story collection by Virginia Woolf published by The Hogarth Press. The stories included are: “A Haunted House””A Society””Monday or Tuesday””An Unwritten Novel” – previously appeared in the London Mercury in 1920″The String Quartet””Blue & Green””Kew Gardens” previously published separately”The Mark on the Wall” – previously appeared in Two Stories (1917)Read these stories and find out why Woolf is one of the greatest writers of all time.
⭐This version of ‘Monday or Tuesday’ is thankfully based on the American first edition, and not the error prone English first edition. Although there is no ‘active table of contents’ in the Go To menu if you click back one page from the beginning you will find that there is one, so you can easily navigate around this book of short stories. If you have never read this book before, then the stories are:-A Haunted HouseA SocietyMonday or TuesdayAn Unwritten NovelThe String QuartetBlue and GreenKew GardensThe Mark on the WallThe majority of these tales are stream of consciousness, and if you are unused to reading this type of story then it may take some time to get used to. There are no plotlines as such here, so don’t expect a more traditional type story. The writing and language corruscates across the page and you are left with kaleidoscopic imagery as you read through these marvellous tales. This is a wonderful book to read that you should hopefully come back to time and again. A great read that is made even better because it won’t cost you.
⭐The text has mistakes, usually 2 words not separated by a space, this interrupts the flow of reading, not a major problem but worth knowing before you buy it.
⭐I am a great fan of Virginia Woolf and I am more than pleased with this one. She cannot do any wrong for me.
⭐Glad I read it.
