⭐A comedy on modern life and love with a plot that allows Bellow to explore his favourite themes on the role of higher culture in a world that worships the base;are we what we see or how we see the world? It helps to know the plot a little beforehand,I re read after my first reading to fully re enjoy. Ken is a Woody Allen type;the one when you’re never sure if he’s neurotic or the world around him is.He idolises his Uncle Benn,a genius in the world of fauna but a hopeless innocent outside it. Ken sees it as his role to protect his Uncle. Benn was cheated out of millions in a real estate deal by his Uncle Vilitzer, a powerful political figure,something that doesn’t interest Benn until he marries in haste (without consulting Ken) into the grasping Layamon family who urge Benn to get his share as Vilitzer is on the way down in the political game. Bear the above in mind and you’ll enjoy this first rate tragi-comedy. ‘More die…’ is perhaps more for veteran Bellow readers-at times you feel the editor should have pointed out to Bellow that the rest of us are 10 leagues below his intellect and he might be getting a bit esoteric, but one of the things I’ve always loved about books by Saul Bellow is the way he makes you thirst to know what he knows;read what he’s read.First timers may not get the full kick out of this great book or want to re read after taking in the complex and wonderful plot.

⭐I haven’t read any Bellow in a long time and I only picked this up because of what Martin Amis talked about in his memoir,”Experience,” that’s definitely worth reading. However, I haven’t found an Amis novel, I don’t mean his father, although I haven’t found much in his novels of any interest either, they’re too long, too plot heavy, and frankly boring, and neither have I found a Martin novel that isn’t incomprehensible substituting verbal fireworks for substance and a good story.So I was mislead into “trying” to read, “More Die of Heartbreak,” and very disappointed. Too much blah, blah, blah, although well-written and erudite, you’re not going to find much on life and love unless you’re willing to endure page after page of a boring, almost irrelevant story. The first premise for writing a novel is to tell a good story. This isn’t a good story, lots of “smart” allusions, Swedenborg et al., I get the feeling Bellow was trying to show how much he knew and how much he’d read, but story,no. Novels like this are why I find it harder and harder to find novels I can tolerate reading.If you’re really interested in cutting through the crap then read Adam Phillips, “Going Sane,” which makes it crystal clear why relationships between the sexes are fraught with destruction, heartbreak, grief, etc.

⭐Book came in great condition. The book itself was yet another beautiful dialogue by Bellow diving into the conflicts of love in his day, which aren’t so different from today, really.

⭐I bought this book to add to my Saul Bellow collection. I expect to read this book in due course.

⭐Bought for my lady friend. She is a bit narrow minded, this will be her first S Bellow. It won a Pulitzer.

⭐Genius though he might be in the vegetable kingdom, his high-level seriousness could be harrowing.’This is the narrator’s opinion about his uncle, a scientific grande in the botany field. To explain the book title: the uncle once answered a journalist’s question about environmental issues with this quip: more people die of heartbreak than of radiation.The nephew himself is an assistant professor of Russian Literature at the same Midwestern university as the uncle. The nephew’s main job is looking after uncle. He has his own skeptical views about the modern world. The essence of the individual is depression. When you are down, you call a number, that will talk you out of suicide, or pray with you, or talk you into a sexual climax. The number can be found all over the public space.Is this a novel of ideas? Well, lots of those are mentioned, but it is really a novel about sex. How do we manage our needs in the light of our options, and specifically in view of this damned aging process. Uncle is actually quite the ladies’ man. Many of his abrupt overseas research trips turn out to be escape trips. He is running from this or that woman’s possessiveness. Women do that to him. They threaten to acquire him.Now uncle has been acquired. He marries a daughter of wealthy people, which draws him into all kinds of financial schemes. Uncle isn’t used to think in those terms.The in-laws are not much older than uncle. Nephew compares this marriage to Churchill’s joke about the empire: acquired in a fit of absent-mindedness. However, nephew doesn’t buy this concept. ‘The secret motive of the absentminded is to be innocent while guilty’.And this is why I like reading Bellow, despite all the BS that he flashes past us. Among the waste, there are quite a few gems.Let me close with this one for today: ‘…it would be against my rule of truthfulness to conceal the fact that I am fond of preposterous people.’

More Die of HeartbreakDer Titel dieser 1987 erschienen Novelle will wohl sagen, die meisten Menschen sterben nicht an diversen Erkrankungen, sondern an gebrochenem Herzen. Ein ungewöhnlicher Roman. Sehr lang, vielleicht sogar (angenehm) langatmig. Es geht um zwei Personen.In erster Linie um einen russischen Juden, der im kalten, kapitalistischen, egomanen Chicago lebt und sich einzig und allein Pflanzen widmet. Er ist Botaniker mit Weltruf, eine Kapazität auf seinem Gebiet, überall auf der Welt zu Vorlesungen willkommen. Er forscht unter anderem über Lichen, das sind flechtenartige Gebilde, die u.a. in der Arktis und Antarktis zu finden sind. 90 % ihrer Lebenszeit sind sie zu Eis gefroren und sozusagen im tiefen Schlaf, eigentlich tot. Bei etwas Wärme, sprich Sonnenlicht, wachen sie auf und wachsen weiter bis zum nächsten Kälteschlaf usw. Sie sind eigentlich unsterblich. Der Wissenschaftler ist aus Russland in die USA ausgewandert und lebt hier nun in seiner universitären Welt, also auf einer akademischen Insel mit ausreichendem Gehalt, relativ frei von Sorgen.Als zweite Person erscheint sein Neffe, der Sohn seiner Schwester, aufgewachsen und gebildet in Paris. Er ist ein durch und durch hoch gebildeter traditioneller Europäer, ebenfalls mit jüdischen Wurzeln in Russland. Seine Welt sind die russischen Autoren des 19. und 20. Jahrhundert. Er hat einen Lehrauftrag an der Universität in Chicago und führt dort in seinem exotischen Fachgebiet ein angenehmes Nischendasein. Auch hier ein winzig kleines Feld, eine kleine Insel im Getriebe der Neuen Welt. Gegen den ausdrücklichen Willen seiner französisch/europäischen Eltern geht er zu diesem besagten Onkel nach Chicago, um einerseits von ihm zu lernen, andererseits ihn zu beschützen. Dieser Onkel ist die einzige Bezugsperson, die er in Amerika hat.Zwei russische Juden in der Neuen Welt, ein Thema, welches Bellow immer wieder aufgreiftDie Geschichte kreist um die Beziehung zu ihren jeweiligen Frauen, die verschiedener nicht sein können. Der junge Neffe liebt eine einfache, fast primitive, animalisch anmutende, zwergenhaft pralle Frau, mit der er ein Kind zusammen hat.Der Onkel heiratet eine „Schönheit”, gebildet, klug, aus allerbesten Kreisen Chicagos.Die Handlung soll nicht verraten werden. Aber wie der Titel schon sagt:More Die of Heartbreak”. 10.02.2018Dobelli und andere Literaturliebhaber sagen, gute Bücher müsse man zweimal lesen. Dann erschließe sich eigentlich erst der Sinn des Inhaltes in seiner ganzen Weite und Tiefe.Nach einigen Jahren wurde dieses Buch also zum zweiten Mal gelesen und zwar mit Freude und Gewinn. Die Rahmenhandlung ist klar, man erkennt, dass unter diesem Ablauf der Handlung jedoch noch einiges mehr steckt. Die fein gesponnenen Unterschiede der Beziehungen der beiden Männer erscheinen in einem klareren Bild. Dabei denkt der Autor intensiv und sehr ausgiebig über die Beziehungen von Mann und Frau nach, eine große Zahl von Philosophen wird zitiert und interpretiert, grundsätzliche Fragen werden aufgeworfen, Erhellendes und Widersprüchliches.Auf der einen Seite der Botaniker Benn, der letztlich nur als eine Figur im hochgestochenem, korrupten, letztlich ihm völlig fremden Umfeld einer vermeintlichen absoluten Oberschicht benutzt wird. Ein in deren Augen skuriler, weltfremder, allerdings auch weltweit anerkannter Wissenschaftler, der gut in die Einrichtung, in das Inventar der Familie passt, ohne dass seine wahre Bedeutung und sein wahrer menschlicher Wert zur Kenntnis genommen werden. Liebe ist bei seiner Ehefrau (und auch bei ihm) nicht im Spiel, nur die Aufwertung ihres Salons, ihrer Partys, ihrer sozialen Aktivitäten durch einen originalen Wissenschaftler sind gefragt. Dabei ist die wissenschaftliche Arbeit selbst absolut uninteressant und wird eher mit milden Spott betrachtet, als die Marotte eines zwar hoch intelligenten, jedoch eher belächelten Professors außerhalb der Realität seiner neuen Familie. Wen interessieren Flechten in der Antarktis, über die Benn, der Botaniker, bahnbrechende Erkenntnisse gewinnen konnte. Ihre Ziele sind ausschließlich Geld, Macht, politischer Einfluss. Korruption und Betrug sind die verwendeten Werkzeuge. Hilfreich für seine neue Familie ist zudem die Tatsache, dass man durch die wirtschaftliche und körperliche Vernichtung eines Verwandten des Botanikers an ein riesiges Vermögen kommen kann, was der Tochter und damit der Ehefrau des Wissenschaftlers ein sorgenfreies Leben in Luxus ermöglichen würde.Die Beziehung des 2. Protagonisten, des Literaturwissenschaftlers ist auf ganz andere Weise interessant und psychologisch aufschlussreich.Nochmals: Eines der Meisterwerke des Saul Bellow. Es ist ein Vergnügen und ein intellektueller Genuss, in diesen Roman einzutauchen und sich dort eine Zeit lang zu verlieren.Very nice collection this Penguin modern classics. Saul Bellow : what else ?I must say I have become addicted to this tremendous novelist. After reading this one, you must consider “Herzog”. A masterpiece.
