Description

Shashi Tharoor delivers an incisive biography of the great secularist who—alongside his spiritual father, Mahatma Gandhi—led the movement for India’s independence from British rule and ushered his newly independent country into the modern world. The man who would one day help topple British rule and become India’s first prime minister started out as a surprisingly unremarkable student. Born into a wealthy, politically influential Indian family in the waning years of the Raj, Jawaharlal Nehru was raised on Western secularism and the humanist ideas of the Enlightenment. Once he met Gandhi in 1916, Nehru threw himself into the nonviolent struggle for India’s independence, a struggle that wasn’t won until 1947. India had found a perfect political complement to her more spiritual advocate, but neither Nehru nor Gandhi could prevent the horrific price for independence: partition. This fascinating biography casts an unflinching eye on Nehru’s heroic efforts for, and stewardship of, independent India and gives us a careful appraisal of his legacy to the world.

⭐This book is a good introduction into Nehru’s life as a freedom fighter and to events and influences in his life that shaped his beliefs. It is a good book that helped me understand what Nehru believed India is as a nation, and the legacy he left.Overall a great read, it was hard for me to put down.

⭐A balanced summary of Nehru for those who know little about him.

⭐This is a very good book for those who do not know much about Nehru. Mr. Tharoor’s style is simple and brings out the essential facts in a simple understandable manner. People who know more about Nehru may take issue with him as they might feel he is too kind towards him. But, this book I think is factual and certainly not a scholarly work as Mr. Tharoor himself mentions. I liked it.

⭐I am a huge fan of Jawaharlal Nehru The Architect of Modern India. I sincerely believe that Nehru is a blessing to India just like Mahatma Gandhi.Nehru’s contribution to India reached deep roots and empowered lot of people in the first decade of Independence. This book is an unbiased portrayal of Nehru’s life.I believe that Shashi Tharoor did an amazing job in this book. I am a huge fan of Shashi Tharoor English writing style.

⭐Shashi Tharoor’s review on Nehru is outstanding with regard to his assessment on Nehru’s incovenient relationship he had shared with Mahatma Gandhi – besides vairous other Leaders who fought for the Freedom of India.

⭐Fabulously written. From being a nehru hater in past decade,to nehru sympathizer in current to an ardent fan of nehru; i am overwhelmed by this excellent magnum opus by tharoor.Lucid style but pretty often you need to check into a dictionary to understand some words. The life & career of nehru has been very nicely depicted.Master story teller, tharoor weaves an cocoon of sorts to his readers. You feel all the action racing in your mind while going thru this book.It also highlights nehru’s shortfalls, failures and miseries.Tharoor also goes 1 step ahead in critically assessing the likes of mahatma, patel & nehru himself.Overall excellent and riveting read.I surely recommend this book to all nehru ji fans & ardent followers.Happy reading -Nitin.S,pune

⭐This book gives a very good idea of what Nehru the man was like as well as the politician, and the role he played along with other key figures of the time in the partition of India. There are plenty of quotes and the author doesn’t avoid contentious areas. Very readable which is aided by a favourable font size. While some biographies word-wash the subject, this book provides a constant flow of information without the bluster or the dusty recesses of the English language being used. A very interesting and informative read!

⭐This is a short biography on Jawaharlal Nehru. Shashi Tharoor’s style of narration was sharp and easy to read for the most part, except towards the end of the book, where it became kind of fussy. The book begins with the events just preceding Nehru’s birth and goes on to describe his life during childhood and further. The book is not a hagiography. The author discusses both the positive as well as the negative aspects of Nehru. He talks about how Nehru’s integrity, his strong belief in secularist ideals, equality, his utmost cautiousness when it came to possibility of dictatorship, and his respect for democratic institutions helped build a stable democracy as ours has been. He also talks about the failures on his part, especially his closed economic policy which avoided foreign investments, which was actually the result of the fear of repetition of what had happened through the East India Company, his much impugned foreign policy which was the product of a blind trust on the neighbouring countries and his desire for an Asiatic consortium, and of course his irascibility and rigidity of manner. It is a good book to learn more about the man who is probably the most responsible of all for the stable democratic instrument which our country is.

⭐If any person raises his hand to strike down another on the ground of religion, I shall fight him till the last breath of my life, both at the head of the government and from outside.’- Jawaharlal NehruNehru, The Invention of India is a concise and readable biography of Jawaharlal Nehru. For more information you can visit -Dontbignorant.in
