User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Wonderful book, great seller

⭐Very good condition for a used book that has been out of print so long. Also a very good read with lots of intelligent information which still applies to today. If I had my way this book would never have gone out of print and would be required reading for all High School students.

⭐Bertrand Russell at his best. Clear, concise & thought-provoking. This is the first book of Russell I read and purchased this copy to re-read. It is a useful addition to your collection

⭐I can recommend to as wide a readership as possible, although I think if you liked Russell’s other political books, ie political ideals, proposed roads to freedom, in praise of idleness etc. you will like this one. There are some aspects of the book’s content which is most definitely dated, or of its time, although none of the predictions are as off the mark as his suggestion in Unpopular Essays that state residential childcare would prove so successful that the conventional, nuclear family could be doomed. That said some of his points about the inability of the third world to engage in stand alone self-government does smack of a sort of imperial paternalism at least, racism at worst (I say that and I am a pretty big fan of/apologist for Russell). The other aspect of the writing which I dislike would probably be the preoccupation with population and supposed over population. This is a theme which seems to be pretty perennial in the anglo-sphere, particularly some more privileged parts, although there have been some better challenges to that kind of thinking more recently (such as Factfulness by Hans Rosling).Besides these points its good to read a book which is more optimistic than pessimistic, explicitly holding out hope for a better time in the future. Its also fun to read books written in earlier times with predictions for a tomorrow which has become our present today, discover how off the mark they could be or where as it turns out. I dont know why this book did not get republished as part of the Routledge Classics reprints as it is still a good read. Recommended.

⭐Received the book in very good condition considering its nearly 40 years old. Service was quick and proffesional. Would shop again from this seller.
