The text material in the present volume is designed to be a more or less self-contained introduction to Newtonian mechanics, such that a student with little or no grounding in the subject can, by beginning at the beginning, be brought gradually to a level of considerable proficiency.A rough guide to the possible use of the book is suggested by its division into three parts. Part I, The Approach to Newtonian Dynamics , is intended to serve two purposes. First, it does discuss the basic concepts of kinematics and dynamics, more or less from scratch. Second, it seeks to place the study of mechanics squarely in the context of the world of physical phenomena and of necessarily imperfect physical theories.Part II, Classical Mechanics at Work, is undoubtedly the heart of the book. The initial emphasis is on Newton’s second law applied to individual objects. Later, the emphasis shifts to systems of two or more particles, and to the conservation laws for momentum and energy. A fairly lengthy chapter is devoted to the subject that deserves pride of place in the whole Newtonian scheme-the theory of universal gravitation and its successes, which can still be appreciated as a pinnacle in man’s attempts to discover order in the vast universe in which he finds himself.Part III, Some Special Topics, concerns itself with the problems of noninertial frames, central-force motions, and rotational dynamics.

⭐I purchased this book as a supplement to the required textbook (University Physics) for my freshman mechanics course. An understanding of integral calculus would be recommended before buying in order to follow the proofs, but not necessary for most problems (and there are plenty of those).The benefit of this book to me was the language, while sometimes dense, was able to explain the concepts in such a way that neither my professor or textbook couldn’t.
⭐I must say I wasn’t aware fo the existence oif this book until I read their Quantum Physics title. This book is great to beginners in Physics and Engineering, especially if you choose to use it with another author like Halliday, Resnick & Krane, or Serway.
⭐Math is NOT the language of science. Science is!!!
⭐Excellent book. A must read for Physics & engineering majors.
⭐This along with Kleppners Mechanics is among the best books out there. Taylor and Morin are just super as well. But the 1st prize imho goes to Charles Kittel’s Berkeley Physics Course Mechanics. They don’t write ‘em that way anymore. The whole series is out of the world. This book stands out for examples and problems and it’s narrative too
⭐I came to this book as an undergraduate, with plenty of past experience in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, mathematics, and physics. Having used newton’s laws of motion in analysis as if it were second nature I was curious about what this book had to offer but did not expect to learn anything new.I was blown away. The first 6 chapters just discuss the philosophy behind the three laws. If you thought you understood them before, think again. This book was not just eye-opening, it was enlightening. I was understanding these laws in ways I never even imagined these laws had been intended. Far from just being just another look at Newton’s laws this book really studies the physics behind the “Applied Mathematics” approach that I had learned mechanics from.It also teaches you the philosophy of science and makes the CRUCIAL distinction between the deductive and inductive processes of the Scientific Method – something that FEW even among the top graduates seem to recognize these days, and yet it is all-important to ANY aspiring scientist. For that reason alone, I’d recommend that you by the book and read the first few chapters at least, regardless of your field.
⭐I think it’s THE book of mechanics for Physics’ students. Itcovers from basic mechanics (kinematics, newton laws…) to sometopics of classical mechanics. It has many clear demonstrations that are not found in other books for engineers (like Resnick, Tippler…) and contains excellent examples. It has a high level but is very easy to understand. French style, that combines history, original observations, clearity and high-level topics makes you love Mechanics.
⭐This review and rating refers to the physical quality of the book, not to the content quality. It seems the book currently published by Norton is a poor quality photocopied version of the book. The diagrams with the grey backgrounds are really bad. I understand that the technology that was used to originally publish the book is obsolete but that does not excuse the current poor quality reproductions.Although Norton is the only publisher of this title, the other titles in the series are also available from another publisher although I cannot confirm if the print quality is any better.
⭐French pulls off what I once thought impossible: to offer an engaging, challenging and lively read on Newtonian mechanics. What is often considered the most dry topic in physics is brought to life here by French’s skillful interweaving of mathematical sophistication, intuitive explanation and history of science. What I particularly appreciate is that, unlike most modern textbooks, this book is not written as if intended for teenagers with attention deficit snydrome. French assumes that the reader is someone who is interested in mechanics and willing to invest time and effort to understand the subject, and so one will not find any watered down explanations or lamentations that certain ideas are beyond the scope of the text. The questions at the end of each chapter are of mixed value. While they are all carefully constructed to test the readers intution rather than just an ability to plug numbers into equations, some will refer to quantities and concepts that were not covered in the main text of the book, and are therefore of little use to anyone who does not wish to reference back to other texts/websites (though these questions are definitely in the minority).The biggest problem I have with the book is the dreadful print quality. The headings on each page that reference the respective chapter and subsection are practically illegible, and the diagrams are printed in faint grey on a faint grey background meaning that half the time one has to guess which symbols mentioned in the text correspond to which elusive silhouttes in the diagram. I was unsure whether or not deduct a star for this since it does not substantively affect the actual quality of the text, but the printing is so bad that it actually reduces the amount that can be learned from it. All in all this is the best book on mechanics I have come across, but try to obtain a different print edition.
⭐Excellent writer of an excellent physics series.I wish he’d been my lecturer at Uni years ago instead.

French, “Newtonian Mechanics” fa parte della serie MIT Introductory Physics Series – insieme a “Special Relativity”, “Vibrations and Waves” e “Introduction to Quantum Physics” – e rappresenta in un certo senso la risposta del MIT alla “Fisica Di Berkeley” e alle “Fisica di Feynman”. Eccellenti testi di fisica che hanno formato generazioni di fisici e ingegneri.Questo volume, ristampato da Norton in una versione in brossura dal basso costo ma dalla bassissima qualità, è a mio avviso una delle migliori introduzioni alla fisica classica presenti sul mercato a tutt’oggi.Non troverete qui fotografie a mezza pagina o figure dall’esagerato quanto inutile uso del colore che contraddistingue molti testi moderni (e non mi riferisco ai sussidiari delle elementari, purtroppo, ma a testi universitari); né avrete contenuti dimezzati, con controparti accessibili previa registrazione su scomodi siti web che dopo un paio d’anni spariscono senza lasciar traccia – se non un rimando all’acquisto della nuova edizione trimestrale. Quello che trovate in questo testo è un’introduzione chiara ed esaustiva alla fisica che si concretizza nell’illustrazione dei concetti e delle applicazioni della meccanica newtoniana.Un’introduzione che parte letteralmente da zero senza dare nulla per scontato e che supplisce alla ‘mancanza’ (affatto sentita) di inutili fotografie e testo colorato con una prosa chiara e lineare e un’attenta scelta degli argomenti trattati.French non solo sa la fisica, ma sa anche come spiegarla e come prevenire i dubbi dello studente su quelli che sono i fondamenti della fisica. Lo stile è discorsivo e ogni capitolo poggia le basi su quelli precedenti – se cercate un manuale con esposizione, formuletta, esempio, allora questo libro non fa per voi. Se invece cercate il punto di vista di un cultore della materia su come si dovrebbe insegnare la fisica al primo anno di università, allora French non vi deluderà.Il livello è ovviamente introduttivo, ma la didattica è di alta levatura.Questo è il libro ideale per iniziare a studiare fisica a livello universitario. Le lezioni di Walter Lewin (altro Docente con la “D” maiuscola) presenti sul sito di Open CourseWare del Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT OCW) traggono ispirazione proprio da questo testo. Una volta letto il French (e almeno il suo altro stupendo volume “Vibrations and Waves), potrete passare tranquillamente al Kleppner & Kolenkov per una trattazione più orientata all’aspetto applicativo della meccanica classica (sempre a livello elementare).Due parole sull’edizione Norton in brossura: costa poco (o perlomeno costava molto poco rispetto all’edizione rilegata) e bisogna dare atto all’editore di aver fatto uno sforzo per aver deciso di ristampare questi classici in un’edizione alla portata di tutti, ma……ma la brossura è a dir poco indecente: lo strato di colla è infimo e se cercherete di aprire il libro per poggiarlo sul piano della scrivania è solo questione di tempo prima che il dorso di spezzi con un sonoro ‘crac’. Quindi, se lo avete acquistato, state attenti a come lo maneggiate. E fate finta che sia di cristallo. In sintesi: ottimo testo introduttivo, ma pessima edizione in brossura.

⭐Little tough book as one can expect, but very sound theoritically. Should have atleast few solved examples in each chapter. Only I missed that part.
