    Description

The third, revised edition of this popular textbook and reference, which has been translated into Russian and Chinese, expands the comprehensive and balanced coverage of nuclear reactor physics to include recent advances in understanding of this topic. The first part of the book covers basic reactor physics, including, but not limited to nuclear reaction data, neutron diffusion theory, reactor criticality and dynamics, neutron energy distribution, fuel burnup, reactor types and reactor safety. The second part then deals with such physically and mathematically more advanced topics as neutron transport theory, neutron slowing down, resonance absorption, neutron thermalization, perturbation and variational methods, homogenization, nodal and synthesis methods, and space-time neutron dynamics. For ease of reference, the detailed appendices contain nuclear data, useful mathematical formulas, an overview of special functions as well as introductions to matrix algebra and Laplace transforms. With its focus on conveying the in-depth knowledge needed by advanced student and professional nuclear engineers, this text is ideal for use in numerous courses and for self-study by professionals in basic nuclear reactor physics, advanced nuclear reactor physics, neutron transport theory, nuclear reactor dynamics and stability, nuclear reactor fuel cycle physics and other important topics in the field of nuclear reactor physics.

⭐This book is the one assigned for my reactor physics class and the Lamarsh and Duderstadt books were “suggested” reading. Well in almost every lecture the professor was solving formulas and commenting that the we’d better write the formula’s down because they weren’t in the Stacey book. I finally just got the Lamarsh book and everything is in there. I haven’t used this book (the Stacey book) at all and only used the Lamarsh book. The book just throws formula after formula at you with very little explanation or example. I would suggest if you are taking a reactor physics class and this book is assigned to pick up the Lamarsh book. You will not learn anything from this book.

⭐My professor was so excited when this new book came out. As we started reading it, we realized that the doctor who wrote this book was aiming it at an audience who would already know all of this, never really introducing any new terms or reviewing in any way the new materials to allow the student (who is supposed to be learning it for the first time) to really learn the subject. We ended up switching back to the old book for the remainder of the class. Over all, don’t buy unless you already know what you are talking about.

⭐A very comprehensive and modern book on reactor physics. Covers fundamental and advanced topics.

⭐Stacey goes through the basic topics, like fixed-source problems and one- and two- speed diffusion, at breakneck pace with few examples or even derivations, to the point that it’s not useful to teach yourself or even to refresh your memory. That being said, the book “slows down” in the more advanced chapters, going at a more appropriate pace starting with transport theory. Stacey does a solid job with these topics, and even covers topics not found in other books, such as space-time kinetics & calculus of variations. Nodal methods, a major part of modern nuclear design, also make an appearance. In short, Stacey’s book is a good reference for advanced topics, but is too rushed in its explanation of fundamentals to be a primary or only reference, especially if you haven’t previously studied reactor physics. It also serves as a good “halfway point” between diffusion-based reactor physics texts, and transport theory books like Lewis & Miller.

⭐I have both Duderstadt’s and Stacy’s book and can safely say that Duderstadt’s book is definitely more of a theory plus examples book, however some parts of the book are a tad bit out of date. On the other hand Stacy is a nuclear physicist so his books are really not going to have examples(I have I believe most of his publications). There are sections that are thin in one book that are more throughout in the other and vice versa.Lets put it this way, if your professor gives you either Stacy’s or Duderstadt’s book, you need easy access to the other one. This book is intended for a senior level audience with at least a complete understanding of radiation physics and a basic understanding of Reactor Physics.
