Description

In Out of Eden, Paul W. Kahn offers a philosophical meditation on the problem of evil. He uses the Genesis story of the Fall as the starting point for a profound articulation of the human condition. Kahn shows us that evil expresses the rage of a subject who knows both that he is an image of an infinite God and that he must die. Kahn’s interpretation of Genesis leads him to inquiries into a variety of modern forms of evil, including slavery, torture, and genocide. Kahn takes issue with Hannah Arendt’s theory of the banality of evil, arguing that her view is an instance of the modern world’s lost capacity to speak of evil. Psychological, social, and political accounts do not explain evil as much as explain it away. Focusing on the existential roots of evil rather than on the occasions for its appearance, Kahn argues that evil originates in man’s flight from death. He urges us to see that the opposite of evil is not good, but love: while evil would master death, love would transcend it. Offering a unique perspective that combines political and cultural theory, law, and philosophy, Kahn here continues his project of advancing a political theology of modernity.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐What is the problem with original sin? Poor Adam and Eve wish they had had some hindsight to work with before making, what seemed like an easy choice.

⭐I have studied the problem of evil for many years now and have probably read every major (and some minor) work on the subject. I came across this book on accident when I had to write a seminary paper on the topic. I could not put this book down. In fact, all of the other books I had been reading for preparation for my final paper I sold on Amazon. I kept only this book and used it as my main source (though typically I use multiple main sources for a paper like this). The book was well argued and convincing. Though I have read many philosophical works on the subject this book comes across as more theological. It does weave philosophy throughout but maintains that this is a theological/anthropological issue. A good understanding of Kierkegaard, though not necessary, will make this book much richer. As one who has read every major treatment on the subject I highly recommend this book. Warning: For those who are hoping that this book will bolster a particular theological agenda or position it will NOT help. This book is very original and I believe treats the subject autonomously. Great Read…..

⭐This book is one of the best books that I have read on the problem of evil. I don’t agree with the authors treatment of Genesis as myth, but his insight on this subject is profound. The most enjoyable thing about this book is that the story of the fall of man has never been presented in a more convincing way. Whatever your views on the first chapters of Genesis are they are very likely to change after reading this book. Those who believe that it is true will be amazed at the depth of insight into the human character that it offers, those who are skeptical will find it difficult to remain unconvinced. The author proves that of all models that have been offered in the past as an explaination for evil that which is discribed in the Genesis account is the most convincing. After reading his arguements I agree. This book also has the most reasonable explaination for mans ability to justify slavery and torture that I have ever read. Not for the casual reader, but those who have an interest in the cause of human evil and have a little knowledge of theology, psychology, sociology, or philosopy will find it an amazing book.

⭐Very well written. Great illumination upon a daunting and troubling subject.
