⭐A classic in the field. Bought it to replace the long gonecopy I used in grad school.

⭐I studied this book when I was in the graduate school. It is a very good introduction to quantum field theory.Especially, Dr. T.D. Lee provided many personal insights on the field theory and particle physics, which areabsent in other standard textbooks. Moreover, the necessary mathematics is taught from the basics, and canbe applied to other areas of physics. To read this book, the mathematical background you need is just themultivariable calculus.

⭐Physicist Tsung-Dao Lee presents a wonderful, self-contained, exposition of quantum field theory. The preface: “…self-contained, more pragmatic than axiomatic, derivations done explicitly.” Contemporary Physics writes: ” its appearance arouses great expectations, they are not disappointed. Students will learn a great deal…professionals will consult it with pleasure and profit…” ( 1982, Volume 23, Number 2). A Note: Lee uses fourth component of ” ict,” and sets value of c equal to one. The mathematical steps are detailed, the physical discussions superbly expounded. A hallmark of clarity and a unique presentation offering a treasure trove of ideas in field theory. The text progresses from spin zero, to spin one-half, concluding with spin one (Srednicki, if you will recall, follows that layout in his later 2007 textbook).Highlights of this text include:solitons–historically motivated (chapter 7), order of magnitude estimates (chapter 8), symmetry considerations given general discussion, then, mathematical preliminaries (tensors, group representations ). Kaonic systems, vacuum as source of asymmetry (beautiful discussion), quark confinement, analogy with superconductivity (another beauty) followed by quantum chromodynamics and gauge theories, these while providing technical details along the way.The discourse on path integrals (chapter 19, 75 pages) includes a self-contained synopsis of Grassmann algebra, these topics rendered with clarity. Much more besides: bag model quarks, atomic parity violation, Higgs mechanism, Parton picture. Note: Chapter 21, Weak Interactions, assumes all Neutrino masses to be zero. Read: ” At present, the intermediate Boson is still in the realm of hypothesis.” (page 643). Concluding chapter, entitled Outlook, includes this remark: ” At present, the correctness of quantum mechanics is viewed almost universally as beyond question. Yet, how sure are we? How solid is its foundation ? ” (page 826).Required reading for all interested in a serious, beautiful, exposition of…fields (part one, being composed of the initial 160 pages) followed by particles (part two).

⭐This is one of the best books I ever read. T.D. Lee, a distinguished Nobel prize winner, wrote this book so that bright chinese students could learn both quantum field theory and particle physics with little more than the book itself. It was a great success. The book is practically self contained, starting from classical point dynamics and going up to quantum chromodynamics, Weinberg-Salam, etc., in a very organized and pedagogical way, which doesn’t exclude depth and great originality, even in much treaded soil. Don’t think it has been superseded. You won’t find such a delightful treatment of field theory and its applications anywhere else. This is my absolute favorite.

⭐very good
