Description

An up-to-date, clear but rigorous introduction to the philosophy of science offering an indispensable grounding in the philosophical understanding of science and its problems. The book pays full heed to the neglected but vital conceptual issues such as the nature of scientific laws, while balancing and linking this with a full coverage of epistemological problems such as our knowledge of such laws.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Very useful in my classes

⭐Clear and essential

⭐I learned after starting my class and beginning this book that philosophy is not my thing. The book itself was fine and downloaded nicely onto my kindle.

⭐so i will finish this review when i have finished reading (sorry) p.s. good so far. This is a core text for philosophy of science students at ANU.

⭐This book does a good job in explaining different schools of thought. My issue with this book is that may of the examples used are just plain WRONG. The book towards the beginning uses an example of a black car vs a white car heating up in the sun. It states “white things absorb heat less rapidly than black things.” How cringe-worthy! There are many, many instances of this in the book. I enjoy reading it until some horrible misinterpretation comes along. These poor examples do nothing to back up any claims made (and can, in some cases, cast doubt upon them).

⭐Had to take this book for a Philosophy of Science course and overally it’s a good read in that it doesn’t assume a great deal of philosophic understanding from the start (so it’s good for STEM majors, as was I when I took the course). Chances are you’re buying this because it’s a requirement for your course, but if you’re not it’s a great way to find areas of philosophy that interest you, and hopefully steer you away from gross New Atheism and into something nontheistically substantive.

⭐Get this book. Great explanations to give professors! Good advice for term papers. Written by a man who cares for struggling philosophy students everywhere.Thank you, Alexander Bird.Lazslo Frobion

⭐This is a very solid introduction to some aspects of the philosophy of science. This book is particularly strong when it comes to explaining and critiquing induction and scientific method. (It is less strong, in fact largely misses out other aspects of the philosophy of science). I think this book will primarily interest a philosophy student at undergraduate level who is focussing on topics like methodology and induction – and if that is what you want then this book will be a very good choices. It is sufficiently deep, not very technical and pretty easy to read. However, there are other introductions (e.g. Alex Rosenberg’s) which cover a wider range, although not so good on methodology, with a more stimulating writing style. Bird is a bit dry at times. If you want a general read on philosophy of science or other things than methodology then perhaps try elsewhere.
