Description
Why is it that so many efforts by liberals to lift the black underclass not only fail, but often harm the intended beneficiaries? In Please Stop Helping Us, Jason L. Riley examines how well-intentioned welfare programs are in fact holding black Americans back. Minimum-wage laws may lift earnings for people who are already employed, but they price a disproportionate number of blacks out of the labor force. Affirmative action in higher education is intended to address past discrimination, but the result is fewer black college graduates than would otherwise exist. And so it goes with everything from soft-on-crime laws, which make black neighborhoods more dangerous, to policies that limit school choice out of a mistaken belief that charter schools and voucher programs harm the traditional public schools that most low-income students attend. In theory these efforts are intended to help the poor—and poor minorities in particular. In practice they become massive barriers to moving forward. Please Stop Helping Us lays bare these counterproductive results. People of goodwill want to see more black socioeconomic advancement, but in too many instances the current methods and approaches aren’t working. Acknowledging this is an important first step.

⭐PLEASE STOP HELPING US How Liberals Make it Harder for Blacks to Succeed Book Review and Commentary by B. ChapinskiThe title of this book is a baffling enigma. Why did the generator of this paperback labour on research investigations to mold this dissertation? It’s doubted that any green back ideology was the prima causa. After all, his wife was a university professor and he’s connected to Wall Street (Upper Middle Class). This is a fascinating read. The author, Jason L Riley, according to media info, appears to be a likable guy. Riley’s labored as a journalist and is a family man, with three children. The title of his book is very unusual. Almost immediately there’s reference that it has been about half a century since President LBJ spoke at Howard University (1965). Johnson was not only fighting in Asia (he had created the Gulf of Tonkin incident); LBJ launched a cultural war in the United States. In his mind wars in Asia and the US had to be conducted.LBJ transferred tax dollars from the B&W American middle-class and upper class to what he considered the disadvantaged. He was the God Father of Entitlements and Affirmative Action. Riley tells us that the result of LJB’s dreams was the reduction in Black college graduates. Monsieur JR is married to a White. However, he writes that most Blacks, just like Whites, overall prefer to be amongst their own kind. LBJ’s policies sought to change the US landscape. He did not create harmony in either Vietnam or the US.LBJ was a primary reason for so called population displacement. People became rewarded for anti-social behavior. LBJ gave birth to laws accommodating such character. The author tells us that another culprit of criminal behavior was/is celebrated Black culture. Why would a citizen work if he / she would be given entitlements and (2) year after year get sucked into the everyday indoctrination rap “music?” As a side issue it’s fascinating to know that Jason’s wife got sacked from her job. Her crime: Engaging in free speech. She thought the propagation of University Black Studies might not be the best of ideas.Encouraging anti-social behavior has continued from LBJ, to Clinton to Obama’s era. Mr. Riley has a chapter pertaining to Obama’s White House. Readers learn Black support for the president has remained solid. It is generally acknowledged that Obama holds about 95% of the AfroAm support. Yet, BO was disastrous for all US groups. Medium household income dropped 3.6% for Whites but nearly 11% for AfroAms. Black homeownership in 2011 had fallen drastically. It wiped out more than four decades of American gains. Didn’t Riley know that support for BO was not due to economics, but to Identification?Despite economic and cultural failures, Black solidarity for Obama was/is a fact. Those who questioned BO’s failures were slanted with insults such as Uncle Tom, Oreo and race traitor. The administration saw that employers’ criminal background checks in screening job applicants, as unjust. Thus, bureaucrats, under ploys, unleashed Federal power on businesses. This force also hit White suburban residential regions / communities that were insufficiently integrated. As noted, Jason Riley, like other researchers, asserted that most Blacks have no interest in living within mostly White neighborhoods . It seems US administrations kept fostering an “Us-Against-Them” concept. The Fed didn’t want to leave folks alone. The White House and its cohorts played the race card not only in elections but in shading Black on Black crime. Such criminal activity, according to the author, played a back seat roll. Attorney General Eric Holder favored policies that were rejected by all classes. Excuses for Black failure were deep.Unscrupulous innuendos were also thrown out by Vice President Joe Biden. He told an audience that the Republicans want to put Blacks in chains. It was like an echo from Opal Tometi, a second generation NigerianAm. The B&W Culture War was not always like this.Readers of this book learn about Booker T. Washington. His autobiography was translated into seven languages. It was the best selling book ever written by a Black American. He was respected. A 1942 ship was even christened in his name. President Eisenhower created a national monument to honor the former slave. We learn that his legacy came under assault in the 1960s. That was the MLK era. Brooker T had stressed self-improvement, not political rights via confrontation. The NAACP, Malcolm X and MLK followed a different road than the famous Brooker T. Washington’s diplomatic highway.A congressman, John Lewis, suggested Washington should be vilified. Why? Because he worked with White Americans. MLK’s implication was direct-action protest. By the 1970s Black dependency on the entitlements and welfare grew like wildfire. It was out of control. The same could be asserted regarding Black births to single mothers. Recent books by Blacks indicate they are a sea of dysfunctional seeds. Many cities engaged in reverse discrimination. This was done on the back of various maneuvers. The implement of racial preferences became Capitol Hill policy. Reverse discrimination was entrenched. The Culture War’s battle for Atlanta is a fine example. The political troop build up included the hiring of municipal employees. Soon racial gerrymandering was instituted. This created special Black voting districts. Yet, Black candidates from majority White districts were winning political races. A Black Republican from Connecticut won a congressional district that was nearly 90% White. While EuroAms we’re bending over backwards to assist Blacks, liberal leaders were insisting that self inflicted wounds should be blamed on Whites, or society. Mr. Riley stresses something that upsets both the liberal community and civil rights industry. JR, a symbol of family stability, tells his readers that a Black man in the White House might be less important and having a Black man in the family home.In the chapter entitled Culture Matters the author refers to the success of other groups. He tells us that the assistant secretary for LBJ, Patrick Moynahan, gave a warning that the Black family was in the state of crisis. I remember that episode and how Moynahan was attacked and insulted. At that time about 90% of kids in the USA lived with their dads. By 2011 two out of three Black homes were without fathers. Mr. Riley tells his audience that just 12% of Black households have two parents. Today more than 70% of Black children are born to unwed mothers. In fact only 16% of B households have dads. Here, for some reason, Riley brings his readers into his own existence; he mentions his own family. It is at this point that the author tells us about his home and stable family. A year after he was born his parents left a predominantly Black neighborhood. His father told him he didn’t like what African Ams we’re doing to their own community; he didn’t like Black crime and other uncouth activities. He didn’t want to tempt fate. Thus they lived around Whites.Readers learn that contemporary civil rights leaders propagate a victim ideology; that AfroAms should see themselves is victims. On the other hand, Black immigrants were out performing AfroAms. These included Black groups that used English as a second language. The author also notes the high success rates of Asian immigrants. Dr. John McWhorter’s recent book substantiates this particular reality. It is here that the key part of Jason Riley’s labor is realized. It is written that a culture that takes pride in ignorance and lacks learnedness has a dim future. Readers learn that those attempting to make excuses for Black pathological behavior, rather than condemning such, are part of the problem. This incredible statement can have dire consequences. A Black author, Dr. John McWhorter, has attested to this fact.By the time the readership approaches about 35% of this book he learns about the enemy within. It Is a fact that not only Asians, Whites and tourists fear African Americans, Blacks themselves fear AfroAms. A president of a prestigious Black college stated she’s afraid of Bs. We read that the perceptions of Black criminality are based on the reality of the high Black crime rates. Black congressmen are not effectively addressing this. Perhaps, rather that using gerrymandering, political reps should be chosen by character.People are avoiding issues. Like Prof. John McWhorter and many Black authors Mr. Riley refers to Michelle Alexander. She’s an associate professor who has written a book entitled The New Jim Crow. It’s a bestseller. The New York Times has praised Alexander, as has The San Francisco Chronicle and MSM.Alexander’s has a reluctance to knowledge that Blacks in jail have anything to do with incarceration. She says that years ago Blacks were in metal shackles and today the country is putting them in cages. As for B crime, Obama and Atty. Gen. Holder speak about gun control! The NAACP talks about racial profiling.Between 1976 in and 2005 Blacks committed more than half the murders in the USA. These terrible, astronomical, horrendous, figures are not from the age of segregation. The author jumps to different regions. This is to apparently verify his argument that something needs to be done about B crime. His going to different cities proves he’s not cherry picking.Like most authors Riley’s labour contains statistics. He stresses the B homicide rate is several times that of Ws and some 90% of Blacks are killed by other Blacks, not Asians or Whites. The author notes most Blacks support locking up Black criminals and that this undermines Jim Crow and slavery allegations. If we compare communities, Riley informs his readership about a China town in which an entire Chinese community contained only a few serious crimes. Riley stresses that in places where there are strict gun laws there are staggering amounts of assaulting transgressions. The NRA also confirms this.Unfortunately, the author spends the great deal of time rehashing the Trayvon Martin affair. I won’t touch this because it has been adequately investigated by numerous scholars. They have documented the horrendous background of Trayvon, a tall, low IQ, lean and muscular bully.Riley seems to be upset by a very relevant fact; Blacks with successful academic accomplishments are bullied as being of traitorous character. Moreover, there’s another most critical factor Blacks face; just about everywhere, B families have encountered the criminal justice system, due to violent behavior. As for future economic variables, Riley tells his leadership that the AfroAm population is growing faster than other US races. The Black population grew by 15% from the year 2000 – 2010. The growth of all other groups combined was 9.7%. The author informs his readers that, according to reputable research, just 47% of Black males complete high school. This means they are not adequately prepared for the world of work. There are, nevertheless, exceptions to these unfortunate stats. It’s worth noting that as early as the 1980s B couples earned substantially more than their White peers, when both were college graduates. Riley indicates that AfroAms have much to be desired when it comes to education. The information that Jason provides about successful Black schools is seldom disseminated to the general public. However, the author refers to a school that has 95% of its students go to college. Although 90% of B students attend public schools, Charter schools have proven to be more adapt at providing competitive education. The author wants us to know that these schools demand discipline. Jason Riley takes us into the picture of decent parents attempting to get their kids into a successful school. Some 6,000 students applied for slots in which only 500 were available.Jason connects politics and learning. A large number of Americans comprehend what Mr. Riley has presented in his study; his report has connected power to public education. Interestingly enough, the Obama regime chastised the school system for disciplining AfroAms more than Whites. This took precedence over essential issues, which were side stepped. Read Prof. McWhorter’s work on this. Riley’s take is that liberals do no favors for the B community by sympathizing with Black kids who are troublemakers in classrooms. Mr. Riley refers to Black classes being dysfunctional. He also refers to the nonstop profanity used by Black children. For example the word m-therfucker can have meanings of endearment and respect. Bitch, and Nigar are also common expressions within the Black community. On page 111 is the title, Education. Federal spending for individual students increased by 375% between 1970 and 200. Despite increased spending Black failure has not been alleviated. Black nine-year-olds trail W nine year olds by the same statistics as recorded 25 years ago.As for reading, Blacks are years behind White peers. According to a Department of Education stat, in 2012 79% of eighth graders could not read at their grade level. In Detroit, which in reality is a Black City State, only 7% of eighth graders are efficient in reading skills. The number for math was 4%.By the year 2009 the 50 largest cities in the USA had an average high school graduation rate of only around 53%. The author writes that while the Obama regime and others urged citizens to be patient, until the US school system is fixed, decent mothers and fathers didn’t wish to sit still. Of course, Obama sent his own children to special private schools (even before he became president). This is the same for other politicians. For example Senator Dick Durbin like the Kennedys, made sure his kids attended private institutions of education. If that’s not being hypocritical consider buying the Brooklyn Bridge. The author refers to a highly recognized journalist, Bill Maxwell. Maxwell taught at Stillman, a Black College. That institute had less than a thousand students. Most students would not study and their homes had few books. Most students never developed a love of learning and they performed poorly on standardized testing. Other columnists, social workers and intellectuals have had similar findings. The author returns to a crippling issue that has reduced US potential and harmed everyone. He has an entire chapter on Affirmative Discrimination. Lyndon Baines Johnson becomes the chief topic. LBJ was the Godfather of Affirmative Action. JBL built the tools for reverse discrimination. He replaced B dads.LBJ demanded equality to become factual. It became so bad that large employers faced the blunt of Big Brother’s massive clout and army of bureaucratic soldiers. If the businesses did not contain a significant number of minorities, the employer had to prove there was no discrimination. That was almost an impossible task. Defense demanded benefits be based on workers being a minority. This book, has in print the following words, Affirmative action in practice today is racial discrimination. That’s bold. The B&W fight has been intense. The NAACP insists that every time a Confederate flag is flown, it’s not a symbol of history or heritage. According to the NAACP, it’s a racist sign. The author goes into stats and tells us 49% of Blacks and 37% of Hispanics we’re at the very bottom of GPA scores. At the same time only 9% of White students we’re at the bottom of SAT rankings. Instead of committing my pen to rehashing official stats, it’s better that folks read the research of J. Riley arduous investigations.CONCLUSIO-The author wants to know if Affirmative Action has accomplished it’s goal. In 1940 the Black poverty rate was 87%. By 1960 it was 47%. In 1970 blacks comprised 2.2% of the population. They were 1.3% of lawyers and 1.2% of US engineers. By 1990 those percentages had more than doubled. The author presents a moral stance; Riley insists that Blacks haven’t performed better in the absence of government coerced reverse discrimination like Affirmative Action. Unfortunately, it seems Black failures are measured against Asian and White success. What if, overall, they have different cornerstones, base emotions, character? The fundaments of Riley’s labour are: (1) Family; (2) Culture; and (3) Education. As for AfroAm families, readers are confronted by written context that asserts the US government has effectively replaced Black fathers. AfroAm author Taleeb Starkes takes this farther. Starkes writes Bs are addictive to welfare dependency. The difference between these two authors is that Jason Riley is more diplomatic, whereas Starkes, in crude vernacular, calls a spade a spade, without refined frosting. As for kultura, the author emphasizes that Black culture today not only condones delinquency, it celebrates vulgar “music” (that praises narcotic stupor and murder). Readers learn that Obama articulated his affinity for rappers whose lyrics often elevated violence. Yet, the fact is rappers are spreading degenerate propaganda. Rap often degrades females and Whites. As for education, according to Jason Riley, rather than work for the importance of learning, school administrators have centered on propagating the ideology of diversity. As a result, many Affirmative Action students accepted to elite universities have been overwhelmed. It was no secret that top schools had trouble finding Blacks with similar qualifications as Asians and Whites. As of this date, lots of people have learned to play the race card. For example, on page 166 we read about Elizabeth Warren. She insisted she was a minority. This was to take unfair advantage of others. In fact, it was unscrupulous and dishonest to obtain a reverse discrimination advantage. When reading about this, one wondered about Elizabeth Warren’s ethical and moral principles. Exactly what are the scruples of Elizabeth Warren? Apparently she’s a symbol of what the US election process actually signifies. She was elected as a Senator from Massachusetts. At the author’s conclusion, he tells us that despite Affirmative Action the Black vs White poverty gap has widened. Riley also notes that the poverty rate among AfroAms is no longer declining. Everything’s been done to alleviate pressure on minorities and placing stress upon others. The author believes that the political left has been so hurt about the USA’s past treatment of Blacks that Blacks were held to different standards of behavior than all others. This resulted in Blacks entering general society on their own terms.Liberals sought to improve Black conditions without holding anti-social behavior to civilized standards. We read that Blacks have been conditioned to blame their failures on slavery and Jim Crow laws. This mentality is a dodge of reality. Liberalism also succeeded in convincing Blacks they were victims.Mr. Jason Riley’s labour has been an entertaining puzzle. However, the title is perplexing.
⭐Riley is an excellent writer with compelling facts and a very informed point of view. He provides a great counter point to CRT that is much needed.
⭐This book hits the nail on the head and should be a wake-up call for anyone concerned with race relations.
⭐Personally I would suggest every liberal to read this book.I was labored as a racist after George Floyd killed by the police wrongly,. I was using statistic data to show it was police brutality issue not a race issue. I was against the media broadcasting the issue as solely race issue despite they have access to public data like how many white killed by police (twice) and the violence committed by white, black and asian. (Black committed over 50% of murders and homicides) One thing liberal keep forgetting conveniently is that police only police subset of population, the criminals and suspects, not the entire population. Certainly I hate the riots. I support protests, but riots regardless under which banner are riots. Every time when I brought up culture might be in play, I was accused of being a racist. In the end I had to quit a group which I joined 8 years ago because of the disagreement. Many liberals in my view are descended into purity test. In order to view they are moral by supporting blacks, they are ignoring other groups and real data as well.I think the author could use more data, west india blacks are doing better than average in the US. I do not think people can tell west india blacks from Afrian American blacks by appearnce, which to me it means that no systematic racism exists in the US now, if it does, it is not a biggest contributing factor to why Africa American are lagging behind. I will also like the author talk more about welfare system and how that policy has a negative impact on the family composition in the black community. Either it is true or not true, I would like him to discuss the impact of this policy, which to my utter suprise, he did not.
⭐Eye opening for anyone who wants to think for themselves and stop feeling like a victim of society! Absolutely recommend it.
⭐This is a stunningly informative book. Guided by a clear eyed, non sentimental vision of black culture and history it offers real alternatives to the failed policies that show no sign of being rejected despite the abundance of empirical evidence showing they have not worked. This is a bona fide “must read”.
⭐A very insightful and informative study, written in the US context but of interest and relevance to any Western democracy.
⭐highly reccomend everyone read this book. very interesting points
⭐Pra todos aqueles que querem saber as consequências de políticas baseadas em boas intenções e ñ em fatos ou dados.
