User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Book is more than I expected in terms of content. More of a text book than a book of poetry, but the poems are in there, and that’s what I wanted.

⭐Many lines on my Kindle 3 have rectangular boxes containing questions marks prepended. So “The Wreck of the Deutschland” looks something like???????????????Thou mastering me??????????God! giver of breath and bread;?????World’s strand, sway of the sea;??????????Lord of living and dead;???Thou hast bound bones and veins in me, fastened me flesh,???And after it almost unmade, what with dread,?????Thy doing: and dost thou touch me afresh?Over again I feel thy finger and find thee. There are some poems where this doesn’t happen at all, and others where it regularly occurs. I think the ?s represent spaces for formatting indentations. It would be nice if there were a way to either filter the ?s out or convert them to spaces. Given a relatively low price, and given that this seems to be a comprehensive collection of Hopkins’ poetry, 3 stars seems a fair rating.

⭐Loved Hopkins since I was 18 – too many years ago to even calculate.Margaret, are you grievingover golden groves’ unleaving?…..

⭐This is a truly great book — but the Kindle edition is not properly formatted for the Kindle. There is no table of contents or links to individual poems. The line breaks in many poems are in the wrong location. Some of the greatest of his poems do not even have line breaks at all but are formatted as a single paragraph. Too bad, but I recommend looking for a better edition of this book.

⭐I purchased this as a gift for my dad, after finding out Hopkins is his favorite poet, and he absolutely loves this book.

⭐On my Kindle, I don’t know how to get beyond the introduction and to the poems. I do next page after next page and just get introduction. Pressing the joy stick right does nothing. There is a brief table of contents at the beginning, but Early Poems and Poems are not selectable. Of course, I can go to a high-numbered location, but I have no sensible way to choose the number. In addition, since the introduction was formatted for the Kindle DX, the lines run over on the Kindle 2.Of course if you know Hopkins, you can do a search on a word or two. The only word I knew to search for was “dappled”. This led me to the poem I was looking for, and I enjoyed it and the next few poems. The poems fit on the page quite well.On reconsideration, I wanted to change my rating from one to three stars, but Amazon wouldn’t let me.

⭐eXCELLENT

⭐The best of the best in modern English poetry.

⭐I bought this to replace my battered and beloved Penguin edition of Hopkins, treasured since my schooldays in the ’60’s, assuming I knew what I was getting. But I would give this volume NO STARS if that were an option because it is a misrepresentation verging on fraudulence to call it a book of poetry: it appears to be printed in html, with no spacing and no appropriate formatting. It is nearly illegible and almost impossible to distinguish one poem from another.I am forced to assume it is not a stupendous publishing mistake but a cynical exercise in cheap marketing because the ‘Look inside!’ invitation carefully avoids showing any of the poems, merely the preface .As a former English teacher, I hope no teachers or students are seduced by the attractive cover into buying this as a study text, because it would signally fail to meet any students’ needs.

⭐I give it 2 not 3 stars since 2and a half is not an option. It’s more “just about acceptable” than “OK”.No spacing between Titles and end of previous poems. Best read in landscape on the kindle. Individual Poems cannot be navigated to from contents. One for fans of Hopkins only I would suggest. However everything seems to be here. If it was revised according to the suggestions it would be worth 5 stars.

⭐The poems are wonderful, and all praise goes to Hopkins for writing them, but none at all to Amazon for producing this edition. Their sole concern seems to have been fitting the poems into as few pages as possible. The typeface is tiny, there’s no space between the poems and no regard to page breaks, so it’s hard to tell where one poem ends and the next begins. There’s no index or contents, so to find any particular poem you have to flick through the whole book, preferably with a magnifying glass if you don’t have perfect eyesight. I’m amazed they have the nerve to sell this. They could only get away with it online, if you picked this up in a bookshop you’d never buy it.

⭐This is an extraordinarily badly produced version. The layout is so awful that it is almost impossible to see where one poem ends and the next begins. They run down one side of the page, all cramped. There are no proper headings or divisions. Even the editor’s notes are added immediately after the last poem without a break. I shall never use this copy.

⭐This book is as I wanted in terms of understanding the person, and I found it easy to read. Good value for the money and as usual good service through Amazon.
