Among the latter he classed the systems of Aristotle and Descartes, as well as any scientific theories that lacked empirical support.” (15)Newton’s mathematical science changed the mentality of the world. His religious writing is just now appearing.“Although he denied that religious truths could be proved with mathematical certainty, he drew an almost identical distinction between what was really in Scripture and what was added to it by false traditions or by the artificial productions of the human imagination.” (15)Aristotle was a scientific roadblock. Newton finished removing his science and opened the way. Aristotle and especially other Greeks were also a religious barrier to genuine Christianity. ⭐A few years ago, I read the very impressive first edition of The Cambridge Companion to Newton, which was published in 2002 and edited by Bernard Cohen and George Smith. Very soon, however, I heard that many of Isaac Newton’s unpublished writings were being re-examined and a second edition of the Companion, edited by Robert Iliffe and George Smith, was to be published in 2016 and I read it when it came out. This edition contained a great deal that was new and I was particularly impressed by Prof. Iliffe’s essay on “The Religion of Isaac Newton.” At that time, Iliffe was writing a long book on this same subject, Priest of Nature, which came out in 2017 and which I have now read with great interest and appreciation.Anyone interested in either the history of science, the life of Isaac Newton, the religious controversies of the 17th century, or the nature of reality as perceived by one of history’s greatest thinkers would like this book.If there is one thing that most struck me about the book it is this: whereas people have long regarded Newton’s interest in religion, science and mathematics, philosophy, ancient wisdom (prisca sapientia) and alchemy as separate and in some ways unrelated undertakings, Newton himself regarded them as one great project. The world view that emerges is thought-provoking.I recommend this book to every serious reader; it is likely to be the definitive work on what actually went on in Newton’s mind for the foreseeable future.
⭐This book is for religious historians and theological scholars rather than the curious general reader or, as in my case, the science historian seeking some further background of a giant among physicists. While the essence of Newton as analytical theologian is his low regard for rather arbitrary church doctrines instituted long after the era of founding Christianity and the particular concept of making the rebellious rabbinic teacher into not only a deity but synonymous of God via the Trinity, the exceedingly detailed account of Newton’s religious doubt and investigations is tedious. What becomes evident is that his work on optics and forces of attraction and movement was secondary to his deeper interest in religion. He saw the laws of Nature as the work of God, in comparison to Spinoza’s holistic equivalency. Science today is not at war with religion, and the vast majority of scientists are religious or have adapted spiritual philosophies in which their experimental and observational research are accommodated. The Mystery remains be it the ways of nature or its origins. I wanted to learn more about Newton’s own approach but I was overwhelmed by the minutiae of church history. I aftewards donated the book to a nearby Episcopalian church where the rector might be more appreciative.
⭐Not light reading this, but worth the effort. Anyone in the sciences or serious liberal arts who reflects occasionally on the nexus of science, culture and religion deserves to treat oneself to this account of one of Western Civilization’s and Christianity’s profoundest thinker’s decades-long analysis and review of the foundations of his (and for some of us our own) religious beliefs. I believe anyone with an open and inquiring mind will be very well rewarded for giving a little attention to Rob Iliffe’s splendid work. Just don’t plan on polishing it off at one sitting.
⭐Very dense and well researched book but not really suitable for the casual reader . I found it really hard going and quickly began skipping and more pages before giving up entirely after a hundred odd pages. Best really for those already knowledgable about the subject but who want to learn more
⭐I asked an Isaac Newton scholar which book, if any, they would recommend if they could only have one book on Sir Isaac Newton. Priest of Nature was the one they recommended, enough said!
⭐This is a great book, a bit heavy going if you are not dedicated to the subject. I have some problems with the download on my Kindle but it works fine on line using the reader.
