Description
From the Nobel Prize–winning physicistDuring the last twenty years, dramatic improvements in methods of observing astrophysical phenomena from the ground and in space have added to our knowledge of what the universe is like now and what it was like in the past, going back to the hot big bang. In this overview of today’s physical cosmology, P.J.E. Peebles shows how observation has combined with theoretical elements to establish the subject as a mature science, while he also discusses the most notable recent attempts to understand the origin and structure of the universe. A successor to Peebles’s classic volume Physical Cosmology, the book is a comprehensive overview addressed not only to students but also to scientists active in fields outside cosmology. The first chapter of the work presents the elements of physical cosmology, including the history of the discovery of the expanding universe. The second, on the cosmological tests that measure the geometry of spacetime, discusses general relativity theory as the basis for the tests, and then surveys the broad variety of ways the tests can be applied with the new generations of telescopes and detectors. The third chapter deals with the origin of galaxies and the large-scale structure of the universe, and reviews ideas about how the evolution of the universe might be traced back to very early epochs when structure originated. Each section of these chapters begins with an introduction that can be understood with no special knowledge beyond undergraduate physics, and then progresses to more specialized topics.
User’s Reviews
Editorial Reviews: Review “James Peebles, Co-Winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics””Nothing is more badly needed than a solid but accessible book on cosmology, written by an insider who has not lost his or her skepticism, Peeble’s new book fills the bill admirably.” ― Nature About the Author P.J.E. Peebles is a Nobel Prize–winning physicist and the author of Cosmology’s Century, Quantum Mechanics, and Physical Cosmology (all Princeton). He is the Albert Einstein Professor of Science Emeritus in the Department of Physics at Princeton University.
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐I earned a Master’s in Physics back when we called “dark matter” the “missing mass problem”. There is a lot of deep stuff in this volume, much of it best approached if you know something about tensors already (general relativity being relevant naturally brings the mathematics of curved space-time into play).
⭐It is a harder read than I was hoping it would be, but, it is good stuff. Probably not the best launch pad into cosmological physics, but still great material.
⭐I use this book at Princeton. Just wish I could afford the latest version. What you don’t get in the old editions you will get in class.
⭐As far as the service from this bookseller… superb. It is flat new.I’m not qualified to give a review of Peebles PPC, but I can say it is an invaluable reference and very easy to read. I know only few of the subjects covered. Plan on spending lots of time on the new topics he has covered since his first ‘Cosmology”
⭐Indispensable text for anyone in the field or seriously interested in Cosmology. A reference you can return to again and again. Considered a standard reference for scholarly papers. On my second copy, thank goodness you can still find bargain used versions as good as new.
⭐Very interesting book. Clear introduction to the cosmology and a clear second part where the General there of Relativity is illustrated
⭐good deal
⭐I’m glad I bought this book. Not because I agree with its contents, but because I can see firsthand what the science thought police have accomplished. This was written as a college text-book – that is, for uneducated teen-agers who think they are getting “science,” when what they really are getting is propaganda, biased philosophy, etc., etc. One professor admitted:: And I use that trust to effectively brainwash them. . . .our teaching methods are primarily those of propaganda. We appeal – without demonstration – to evidence that supports our position. We only introduce arguments and evidence that supports the currently accepted theories (i.e., evolution), and gloss over any evidence to the contrary.*
⭐In the field of Cosmology, this may seem a dated book (it was published in 1993), but it is a very thorough and clear review of Cosmology which proves extremely valuable even after twenty years, since the physical principles and the methods have not changed. Although of course the emphasis is on the standard model, it also presents the possible alternatives and it clearly points out the inconsistecies between theory and observational data.
⭐Book in good condition bearing in mind it was second hand (ex-library). Very good price. Content is comprehensive though possibly a little dated. Requires reasonable pre-knowledge and ability to understand the maths
⭐very good book! very good bookstore!
⭐This book is a perfectly overview for bachelor or master students. For total beginners, the overview could be a little bit to short and therefore it is recommendable to read ‘An Introduction to Modern Cosmology’ by Andrew Liddle at first. In my opinion ‘Principles of Physical Cosmology’ is one of the favorit detailed introductions in cosmology for physicist. You found a great overview at the beginning and many details in the further chapters. People who work deeper in the details of cosmology than bachelor or master students will miss new facts and really detailed informations, but they could find many standard calculation and therefore this book could work as a reference book.Note, people who need popular scientific literature, didn’t have fun on such a book, because this book is filled with mathematical formalism.
⭐Very Good
