Description

For courses in Probability and Random Processes. Probability, Statistics, and Random Processes for Engineers, 4e is a useful text for electrical and computer engineers. This book is a comprehensive treatment of probability and random processes that, more than any other available source, combines rigor with accessibility. Beginning with the fundamentals of probability theory and requiring only college-level calculus, the book develops all the tools needed to understand more advanced topics such as random sequences, continuous-time random processes, and statistical signal processing. The book progresses at a leisurely pace, never assuming more knowledge than contained in the material already covered. Rigor is established by developing all results from the basic axioms and carefully defining and discussing such advanced notions as stochastic convergence, stochastic integrals and resolution of stochastic processes.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This is not a book for a beginner to start. You should look at the meaning of ‘with application to’. This book doesn’t spend much time on explaining concepts and ideas. Rather than that, it shows applications. It shows various ways to apply the random process to the real world. But if you have little knowledge about random process and try to solve problems, you will keep asking ‘why?’ to yourself. For me, random process is all about study of concepts and ideas and mathematical calculation is not as much important as grasping concepts and ideas. If you already know Random Process and are proficient in random process, I will recommend this book. Other than that, if you buy this book, it will be the first step for you to hate the random process.

⭐Lots of examples! Purchased textbook for a class. I would have preferred if the important equations were a bit more bolded / separated from examples, but the book was very readable.

⭐This is the worst product I have ever purchased on Amazon. Both the physical quality and the content are poor and have caused a great deal of frustration.Physical Quality: 0 StarsThis paperback binding is worse than any mass market paperback novel I have laid my hands on, much less comparable to other textbooks. After reading a few pages of a chapter, the “binding” (a thin layer of what may as well be Elmer’s glue) seperated, separating “cover” (a thin layer of paper maybe twice the thickness of the pages) from the pages. This lead to issues later where chunks of the book literally falling apart 3 weeks after purchase with a few hours use per week. Several classmates have shown me their books and are plagued with the exact same issue. This is simply unacceptable.Book Content: 1 StarLittle attention is paid to explaining concepts before diving directly into the math. Mathematical properties are hastily described in a mere few words and then described by pages of derivations and math. Additionally, the notation in this book is confusing and often does not match the notation used by the greater probability and statistics community. For instance, a Cumulative Distribution Function (CDF as known by the greater math community) is referred to as a PDF (Probability Distribution Function) in the book, and a Probability Density Function is referred to as a pdf (probability distribution function), leading to much confusion as to which function is being described. This, in addition to the scarce descriptions of concepts, lead to a lot of confusion and headache then tying things back to other sources and/or courses. There is also very little application “for Engineers”, as the concepts are rarely if ever tied to real world applications. The only reason this gets a star is because the problems are typically well thought out.Bottom Line:If you are buying this book as a reference for yourself, find another book. There are much better references elsewhere. If you are buying this book for a class, buy the hardcover used or get the digital version. This paperback has the worst physical quality of any book I have ever owned. $215 for this quality is unacceptable, and the publisher should not be supported.

⭐This is perhaps the worst textbook I have ever seen. The fact that the publisher has kept this on the market is really startling. I wrote the publisher about it, and I encourage you to do the same. Before even evaluating the actual content, this book is full of typographical errors, inconsistent notation across chapters, and poor grammar. The book is full of comma splices, which make it virtually impossible for a native speaker to read fluidly. This makes me feel like I was duped into paying real money for a work of writing that was not properly edited. As far as content goes, the main problem I have with this text is that it intentionally tries to “teach by example.” (They actually waste space explaining that they’re going to teach it by example before turning to the actual theory). They hold off on explaining basic theory and patterns and prefer you to see some relatively advanced examples and worked problems before understanding the basic concepts. I get the sense that each chapter was written by a different graduate student, but no one worked to bring it all together.I find this to be a bad pedagogy for advanced undergraduate and early graduate level work. At the graduate level, engineers need to become mature enough to handle the basic theory. The price of this book is outrageous. I unfortunately think that something unethical is going on here. I have recommended to several professors in my graduate program that this book be taken out of our curricula, because it is doing more harm than good, but semester after semester they use it for our “Random Processes” graduate engineering course – a required course for most Electrical Engineering graduate students. I recommend that if you are registered for a course that is using this textbook, discuss it with your professor before the course begins. Otherwise, you may in fact spend a very inefficient semester of studying and not get much out of your time.I will not even resell my used copy even though it is worthless to me, because I don’t want the poor person after me to have to suffer by my hand. This is a sad token example of what the textbook market in the US has become.

⭐Really like a new book! without any defects!

⭐The book was very good
