⭐I purchased a copy of both volumes based on the recommendation in Gardiner’s book. Gardiner indicates that this is “an excellent pure mathematics A-level text, teaching ideas, not rules, and covering everything except calculus; with lots of good (but tough) exercises and answers.”An exceptional 2 volume set that addresses the requirements of a pre-calculus curriculum, and may also be of value in preparing the student for the AMC and AIME exams. The writing style is straightforward, and the material is built up in a logical and easily comprehensible segments. The chapters on vectors and matrices in particular are very well written. The problem sets range in difficulty – the harder problems really make you think, but if you devote the time to try out all the problems, you will come out with a strong foundation in the topics covered.If your interest is primarily higher algebra, I recommend Hall and Knight’s Higher Algebra. That tome covers a wide range of algebraic concepts and techniques and has a large number of problems for practice, with numerous worked examples as well.Volume 2 addresses complex numbers, conics and more advanced concepts of matrices.
⭐This is an English text from the Cambridge University Press which, according to the preface, covers “those parts of modern `A’ level pure mathematics syllabuses not normally included in standard calculus texts.” From the short time I’ve owned this book, it seems quite good, as it contains much more interesting and challenging problems than a regular pre-calc text. I found it recommended in the book,
