Description
Following on from the successful first (1984) and revised (1993) editions, this extended and revised text is designed as a short and simple introduction to quantum field theory for final year physics students and for postgraduate students beginning research in theoretical and experimental particle physics. The three main objectives of the book are to: Explain the basic physics and formalism of quantum field theory To make the reader proficient in theory calculations using Feynman diagrams To introduce the reader to gauge theories, which play a central role in elementary particle physics. Thus, the first ten chapters deal with QED in the canonical formalism, and are little changed from the first edition. A brief introduction to gauge theories (Chapter 11) is then followed by two sections, which may be read independently of each other. They cover QCD and related topics (Chapters 12-15) and the unified electroweak theory (Chapters 16 – 19) respectively. Problems are provided at the end of each chapter. New to this edition: Five new chapters, giving an introduction to quantum chromodynamics and the methods used to understand it: in particular, path integrals and the renormalization group. The treatment of electroweak interactions has been revised and updated to take account of more recent experiments.

⭐I’m very happy with this QFT book. It’s so much better than the other QFT books I have used. The explanations are clear because this Mandl and Shaw second edition book does not have the huge gaps in explanations that many other books have. It has broad coverage, and also goes into great detail. It is especially good for mathematicians because the way that the formulas are so well defined.I particularly like the gauge theory presentation for QCD. Take a look at pages 222 to 230 for example. But this book is strong in multiple areas, including the mathematical fundamentals of Lagrangian field theory, the K-G and Dirac theories, QCD perturbation theory and electro-weak theory. The thing I like most about this book is that I can see how each line follows from previous lines. Mathematicians expect this, but physics books rarely make clear where their assertions come from, mathematically speaking. The other thing I found with this book was that the symbols are decodable. In other words, whenever I don’t understand a symbol, I can look it up and find its meaning fairly easily. I can’t say that for most QFT-related books.
⭐I never had a formal QFT course in my life, so I was curious to learn it on my own. My curiosity was only incresed by what is called “QFT methods in condensed matter physics”, which I am exposed to quite a bit.The book by Mandl and Shaw is certainly easy to read. In my case I obtained some idea about how the diagrammatic techniques look in covariant form. However, many questions I had had are still left unanswered. While it is obvious that the book is out of date, and it is hard to blame the authors for that, there is no even brief overview of the field and the basic problems it faced in that period. There is no mentioning of the approaches altenative to diagrammatic techniques. In general, the book is not very systematic, but rather present more detailed solutions for several problems that the reader is assumed to be already familiar with. Therefore, I assume, the book is good only as a supplementary material for those studying diagrammatic methods for QFT.
⭐A bit dated, but very useful. The short, “bite-sized” chapters make concepts easier to grasp. Contains a lot of good problems. Avery good lower level introduction to a complex and difficult subject.
⭐It’s a tough call between this and Klaubers “Student Friendly Quantum Field Theory” for who has the best true introduction to QFT. Klauber is certainly more thorough and he painstakingly goes through every single possible step. So if you pretty much can’t get caught. This book is less thorough in walking through steps, but it doesn’t seem to be a problem. The book is still fantastically easy to learn from. You can’t go wrong with either text. It certainly would be nice to have both. One thing to point out is that this text covers many more topics than Klaubers. Klauber stops at renormalizability of QED. This book continues through QCD and the electroweak theory.I guess you could say that Klauber makes a great companion for a QFT1 course through basic QED while Mandl/Shaw will take you all the way through a first year curriculum.
⭐I have cherished Mandl and Shaw’s text for a long time.Prof. Shaw’s new edition now covers extremely important update material including Feynman Path Integrals, QCD, Yang Mills Fields, Higgs Bosons and much more !Thanks Prof. Shaw !
⭐used this book as textbook for a class, not too bad to read. not too hard to understand, but still needs quite effort. some of the homework problems are good. don’t think it’s good for beginners. probably won’t read it again after passing the course.
⭐Great to have this book in a digital format, but the formulas are scanned, and hard to read (at least on an iPad). Hope the formulas will be LaTeXified in future editions.
⭐Very modern methods. A veritable gap since the 1st edition
⭐clean and new copy, very good introduction to qft
⭐I appreciate the logical sequence of presentation. Indeed every statement is derived from previous statements, so knowledge builds up naturally. Frequently topics used as pre-requisites are still summarized, so this book is well contained. I am doing the missing demonstrations relying on my previous knowledge of non-relativistic quantum mechanics, special theory of relativity, one short and thorough introduction to relativistic quantum mechanics and those summaries I mentioned before. Everything fits as it should. In conclusion, I find this book as the first one to study in the field.
⭐Lo uso per i miei studi in fisica teorica e questo, seppur complicato nella notazione, risulta uno dei migliori per la materia! Se volete leggerlo per passione lasciate perdere! Spedizione Amazon perfetta come sempre!
