Description
Continuing the exceptional tradition of the previous editions, Quantum Mechanics, Fourth Edition provides essential information about atomic and subatomic systems and covers some modern applications of the field.Supported by a Web page that contains a bibliography, color versions of some of the illustrations, and links to other relevant sites, the book shows how cutting-edge research topics of quantum mechanics have been applied to various disciplines. It first demonstrates how to obtain a wave equation whose solutions determine the energy levels of bound systems. The theory is then made more general and applied to a number of physical examples. Later chapters describe the connection between relativity and quantum mechanics, give some examples of how quantum mechanics has been used in information processing, and, finally, discuss the conceptual and philosophical implications of the subject.New to the Fourth Edition:A chapter on quantum information processing that includes applications to the encryption and de-encryption of coded messagesA chapter on relativistic quantum mechanics and introductory quantum field theoryUpdated material on the conceptual foundations of quantum physics containing discussions of non-locality, hidden variables, and parallel universesExpanded information on tunneling microscopy and the Bose-Einstein condensatePresenting up-to-date information on the conceptual and philosophical aspects of quantum mechanics, this revised edition is suitable both for undergraduates studying physics, chemistry, or mathematics and for researchers involved in quantum physics.
User’s Reviews
Editorial Reviews: Review Rae’s book has struck almost exactly the right note in attractiveness of language without loss of rigor, and is informal in style and related in tone – The Times Higher Education Supplement fully hits its target as a highly stimulating introduction. This book certainly deserves its place in all university libraries and laboratories. – Semiconductor Science and TechnologyIt has been widely recommended as a course text for the last 12 years and this new edition brings the subjects covered right up-to-date It is recommended for second and third year undergraduates of physics, chemistry, and mathematics undergraduates. – ZentralblattThe addition of this new material has added a further dimension to what was already an excellent undergraduate text. The material is very well written, logically presented, and illustrated with relevant contemporary examples wherever appropriate In summary, this is a first-rate and relatively inexpensive book that would be an extremely useful text for anyone studying or teaching quantum physics at the tertiary level. It would also be a valuable reference for postgraduate students needing a reasonably solid understanding of quantum mechanics for their research in other fields.- P.V. Smith, The PhysicistI find this to be an excellent, clear, and scholarly text and would recommend it highly. I am particularly encouraged by the effort that Rae spends on attempting to explain the large fields of non-locality/Bohm theory I am impressed by the clarity of the text. – Professor Christopher ChantlerAlastair Rae’s book Quantum Mechanics is established as a classic undergraduate text in this field and this is now its fourth edition. The structure of the book remains intact and the subject is logically and methodically developed. One of the major strengths of Rae’s work is the lucidly written text and explanation of the steps This remains an excellent course book in quantum mechanics and I would strongly recommend it as an undergraduate text for quantum physics. – Dr. K. Dholakia, Contemporary Physics
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐Brilliant book. Not for anyone who hasn’t got a mathematical or physics background, but brilliant for students in 1st or 2nd-year university. Was recommended it by my physics professor and it is have been a great help.
⭐Following the good old english academic tradition… book is short in detail, lacking proper explanations in ‘obvious` mathematical derivations, physical deductions, and conclusions, despite the fact that in some cases sentences are repeated to add nothing new! You will find the always loved “it follows then…” “it can easily be shown…”.If this will be your introduction to QM you will need another parallel source otherwise you will be frequently wondering “where did that come from?” “how did he get that”? etc
⭐Product as described, fast shipping, many thanks. I recommend and greet.
⭐Great book for learning Quantum Mechanics, I have a paperback edition (five stars for that). I wanted a Kindle edition to read on the run, BUT BEWARE! the kindle edition doesn’t work on my Kindle touch or my Kindle Android app, it only works on my PC app!! What good is this!!!
⭐Thank you for an informative read. Although this version is a little dated, it’s still perfect for a university student beginning to get to grips with Quantum Mechanics
