⭐If you are new to recursion theory, this book will not help you at all. It is nice to look up definitions, but there are almost no explanations. The presentation is very formal, which I appreciate, but a formal presentation on its own does not make a book very accessible. If you are a student and want to learn about recursion theory, I’d rather recommend the comprehensive book by Odifreddi: Classical recursion Theory, North Holland – Elsevier. It is much thicker – with a good reason :-)If you are a PhD student or even a senior researcher in a similar area, you might appreciate the dense presentation. In contrast, if you are a Bachelor or Master’s student and/or looking for intuition to help you, the lecture notes by Shoenfield have little to offer.
