⭐J B S Haldane felt a mission to inform the public that science was something that anyone and everyone should, and could, take an interest in. His short, and often pithy, essays were, when written, bang up to date. Haldane was driven by a very black and white moral and political sensibility that did not make apologies for anyone. It is easy to look at this book with the 20/20 vision of hindsight and find errors to carp about but there are surprisingly few and some of those are not of Haldane’s making. For instance he writes (in 1939) of the forty eight human chromosomes which were erroneously described in 1923 and finally proven to be two too many in 1956. He references events that have encouraged me to do online research that reveals his uncanny prescience regarding biological science. Much of what he wrote is very clearly explained and as true today as it was when written such that I can use these essays as useful primers for my level three science students. Society has changed but the principles that he illustrates in essays on industrial diseases and the economics of cancer can still be applied with profit to new industries and old diseases. Other essays make one aware of how far we have come in terms of health and safety. Haldane was prepared to take calculated risks with his own health and safety that others would not be advised to emulate. In a pre-NHS Britain he abhorred the impostures practiced on the sick both by quacks and also the respectable pharmaceutical trade pointing out how few remedies were actually effective and how cheap many of them were. His advice about self-medication seems reckless to modern readers but his point was that people should seek to be better informed about what they consume because the purveyors of drugs, wonder foods and such-like were motivated by profit and not the welfare of their consumers. There are many admirable modern, popular science writers but few who write short pieces that even come close to those of Haldane for their ability to grab the attention and get their point across. I can recommend this book for both its historical and scientific value.

⭐What a Treasure Trove of Books I have found in the writing of J.B.S. Haldane . Science in Everyday Life is a slim volume, but it contains a great deal of information which is presented in an easy to read (and enjoy) informative manner. Haldane was a 100% Biologist. He lived it, Loved it and presents it in a remarkably interesting manner. As a high school student, I studied Biology , Chemistry, and Physics , and I had an excellent Biology Teacher, but a reference to J.B. S. Haldane was never offered. I am sorry I missed that!

⭐An interesting book given to a Haldane descendant.
