Description

Still haunted by nightmares of her mother’s death, fifteen-year-old Sienna Jones reluctantly travels to Indonesia with her father’s relief team to help tsunami orphans with their post traumatic stress disorder–something Sienna knows a lot about. Since her mother’s plane went missing over the Indian Ocean three years before, Sienna doesn’t do anything if it involves the ocean or planes, so this trip is a big step forward. But the last thing she expects is to fall for Deni, a brooding Indonesian boy who lives at the orphanage, and just so happens to be HOT. When Deni hears a rumor that his father may be alive, Sienna doesn’t think twice about running away with him to the epicenter of the disaster. Unfortunately, what they find there could break both their hearts.A compelling summer romance, Sea marks the arrival of a stunning new voice in YA.

User’s Reviews

Editorial Reviews: From School Library Journal Grade 8 Up—Sienna is afraid—of airplanes, of the ocean, of life. She has had these fears for three years, ever since her mother’s plane disappeared over the ocean while on a humanitarian aid trip in Thailand. On her 15th birthday, she gets the worst present she can imagine: a plane ticket to accompany her dad and two other doctors on a two-week trip to an Indonesian orphanage—one housing children and young adults who are survivors of the December 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Sienna doesn’t want to go, and the cultural differences and deprivations do not make her any happier once there. On her first night, during a welcoming program hosted by the orphans, she meets Deni, a 17-year-old from Aceh, the tsunami’s epicenter. Their relationship develops quickly and leads to actions and decisions that are ill-considered and dangerous—both in a Muslim culture and during a state of civil unrest. Sienna loses her fears much faster than one would expect, and her return home to a friendship that is evolving into a romance, so soon after she was in love with another boy whose life was filled with tragedy, makes her seem emotionally shallow. Teens who like relationship novels will overlook these flaws, but the book is definitely an additional purchase.—Suanne Roush, Osceola High School, Seminole, FL Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist “I’m sitting alone on the other side of the world talking to a sea turtle that might be my mom.” So begins Kling’s debut novel, the story of 15-year-old Sienna (Sea to her friends), who lost her mother three years earlier when her plane disappeared over the Indian Ocean. Her body was never found, and Sienna secretly believes she could still be alive. Joining her father’s psychiatric team helping child victims of the 2004 tsunami, she spends two weeks in an Indonesian refugee camp where she meets the gorgeous and enigmatic Deni, with whom she has an instant connection and a bittersweet romance. Kling blends facts about Indonesian culture and the wake of the tsunami with a lyrical story of loss and daring to love again. The evocative cover art (a couple silhouetted against watery blue tiles) and exotic locale will attract readers, although the cultural details sometimes lack elegant exposition. Sienna’s loss, newfound courage and eventual acceptance of the changes in her life ring true in the satisfying and wholly believable first-person narrative. Grades 7-10. –Debbie Carton Review “Kling captures the innocence and heartbreak of first romance superbly in this tender love story.” –VOYA About the Author Heidi R. Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I read this 1st edition of Sea AFTER the newly released, revised, and re-titled version (Where I Found You – 12/4/17.) Knowing that there were significant revisions to the new story, I was curious as to what had changed. The ending was quite different and I truly can’t choose which one I prefer. Sea has a fairly closed ending, while Where I Found You is somewhat open-ended. I really enjoyed the ending of Sea, but the revised story sets up the sequel with an interesting twist. I’m excited to see where the author takes Sienna’s story next in Where the Sea Takes Me (4/2/18.)

⭐I finished this book last night, and all night I had Sea, Deni, and Spider’s words running through my head. This isn’t a book you easily forget. It’s a story about finding yourself, what it means to lose everything, love, heartbreak, and it’s written beautifully. I couldn’t put this one down, it was just so captivating and I loved it.Sienna, Sea, Jones is afraid of flying and constantly haunted by dreams of her mother’s disappearance. Ever since her mother has died, she has never been the same. So on her 15th birthday when her dad decides to go to Indonesia, he wants Sienna to go along to help. After debating with herself, she goes. While there Sea meets Deni. Deni is hot, troubled, and somehow just like Sienna. I loved these two characters. They helped each other in so many ways that it was just amazing. Heartbreaking (I was upset – I don’t know how Sienna did it), but amazing. Now we can’t forget the other characters… one who happened to be probably my favorite, which was Spider. Hot surfer boy sweetheart, Spider. I just loved how he was there for Sienna. He’s such a good-hearted kid and believe me, if I could have my own Spider… I would go get one now! Haha. Also I loved Elli. She was adorable and the way Sienna helped her was just meant to be.Hearing the stories from the tsunami, during this book, just broke my heart. I can’t even imagine what it must have been like and how these children kept going. I would have been devastated. Thankfully, this book shows you that, there are people who are willing to help you along the way, you just have to let them. This story was beautiful, and I can’t get it out of my head. Heartbreak, finding youself, love, helping, friendship, and letting go. This book has it all. If you get a chance this book is a must read. 🙂

⭐I really enjoyed this book. I thought the setting was great and the descriptions of Indonesia and the people (and their customs) was very eye opening. Particularly of the destruction the tsunami wrought.I loved learning a little about the relief work and thought it was great how it was pointed out that they were not there to convert their religion or take away their customs. It really bothers me how so many do go over to ‘help’ and take advantage of the people by basically bribing them to convert to whatever religion. That is my own personal opinion in that matter anyway.I also thought it was great how ‘real’ Heidi made it. When relief workers go to help there are things they can’t change. In this case the man who owned the orphanage was accused of using the money donated for himself instead of the orphanage. We never learn if this is true, or just Deni’s opinion (or what he thought). But in real life that is something that relief workers really can’t do anything about. They just have to stand by and watch. They can only do what they can do. They can’t completely change the world.I liked the men in Sienna’s life. Spider was a surfer boy that was easy to imagine, and Deni was completely different. Although things didn’t go exactly as we may wish they kind of work themselves out. Some may be left a little sad (like me) but yet I knew that was the right thing.I found myself a little irritated at Sienna at times, but she is only 15. She seemed a bit naive, but she was quick to ask questions, and this is how we learn many of the customs in Indonesia. I guess she just didn’t quite click with me.Overall this was an intriguing and eye opening read and I look forward to passing this book onto my family and friends. It’s refreshing to read one that will be enjoyed by all my friends and family who are readers.
