User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐For the hardcore Soviet History student this is a collection of works by the Soviet Dictator himself. These works will help one dive into the mind of the mans personal views as a Communist. The average person wouldn’t be interested in this.
⭐Joseph Stalin understood Marxist Theory and how to make application of it in the USSR. That is why Lenin decided to advocate Stalin as a successor and not Trotsky, Bukharin or the others. Stalin proves he’s not some idealistic revisionist, like Trotsky, advocating “permanent revolution” without taking consideration of the lack of state power the Bolsheviks had to achieve “permanent revolution to begin with. Stalin realized the necessity for building a flourishing socialist state while supporting revolutionaries abroad during the process of solidification of the socialist state. Even the 5th architect, Enver Hoxha realized this. Ultras and Revisionists need to read up more and realize state and government are not the same thing.
⭐I purchased this book as a part of the package of books from the New China bookstore in San Francisco, California. This book contains an article written in 1912, or really in 1911, called “Marxism and the National Question.” Lenin highly praised this article and this was the watershed that made Stalin the expert on the policy of the Bolshevik Party toward the national question. The party turned to Stalin to write other many other articlswe on the national question. Three other articles on the national question are contained in this book. These articles are his “Report on National Question at the Seventh Conference of the R.S.D.L.P, (Bolsheviks)” (April 29, 1917), the article called “The October Revolution and the National Question,” (1918) and the article called “National Factors in State and Party Affairs” (April 25, 1923). It is these national question articles that I continue to find very interesting.
⭐The only other person who reviewed this book gave it one star, and said that Stalin was not a good marxist thinker. While I do agree that Stalin had little respect for marxism (and was more interested in bending it to serve his purposes), I did not buy this book expecting to discover a new and better side of the butcher Stalin. On the contrary, when I obtained this book I knew that Stalin’s Marxist writings were pure tripe. However, what is important is that these writings show the historian what were the political issues in the USSR under Stalin, and how he distorted Marxist philosophy (e.g. “Socialism in One Country”) to become the first communist czar.
⭐Stalin despite the flattering summary above was not a great Marxist thinker. Stalin not only missed the basic ideology of Marxism but is also a very poor writer, who’s works at best are boring, inacurate and documents of lies. If you want to read a great Marxist writer I would suggest Lenin or Trotsky. Put these works where they belong, in the fire along with Mein Kampf and anything in favour of George Bush.
