Description

The first book in acclaimed author Jennifer Brown’s thrilling suspense series for fans of Sara Shepard’s Pretty Little Liars, Shade Me is about a unique girl who becomes entangled in a mysterious crime and lured into a sexy but dangerous relationship with a boy who may be a suspect.

Nikki Kill has always been an outsider. Born with rare synesthesia, she sees the world differently. In Nikki’s eyes, happiness is pink, sadness is a mixture of brown and green, and lies are gray.

To Nikki, Peyton Hollis, the ultrarich it-girl at school, was seemingly untouchable. That is, until Peyton is violently attacked and the only phone number the hospital finds in Peyton’s cell is Nikki’s. Suddenly Nikki is pulled into Peyton’s glittering, fast-paced world as she tries to unravel an unfolding conspiracy.

As Nikki gets closer to the dark truth—and to Peyton’s gorgeous older brother—the only thing she can be sure of is death is a deep, pulsing crimson.

User’s Reviews

Review “SHADE ME is a wild ride, illuminating the gritty side of Los Angeles and the beautiful people who populate it. Fans of Veronica Mars will fall in love with Nikki Kill.” — Michelle Gagnon, author of the Don’t Turn Around trilogy“This dark tale hits all the hallmarks of a traditional hardboiled mystery, full of dirty secrets and potential betrayals. Brown (Torn Away) skillfully uses Nikki’s condition to put a fresh spin on time-honored noir conventions.” — Publishers Weekly“Nikki is a complex character with potential for growth, and her gritty determination to find the truth, while it almost undoes her, is what makes her compelling.” — Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA) –This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Reviews from Amazon users, collected at the time the book is getting published on UniedVRG. It can be related to shiping or paper quality instead of the book content:

⭐ Was just really getting into to book and found missing pages and then those pages in the book twice. This happened with the first book I bought of hers. I ended up purchasing the original publish book version and loved it. I plan on returning this one. Just worried I won’t be able to find a good copy this time. Also made myself go check the other 4 books I purchased by her and so far they all look correct, but this is frustrating

⭐ I won the second book, so of course I had to read the first one first. Will say it was a slow start for me, wanted to quit several times but I was thinking its going to get better and it did. Love the ending, did not see some of the twisted. Cant wait to read book two now.

⭐ As soon as I started reading Shade Me I knew I was in for the long haul. I love Nikki’s character and the mystery is well done. Highly recommend.

⭐ I thought it was a good read. My granddaughter is reading the series as part of a college prep English class.

⭐ Loved this book. Her details were amazing. I felt like I was watching a movie while reading this. fast shipping is always a plus

⭐ I absolutely loved this book. The writing quality was impeccable and it had me on the edge of my seat the whole time.

⭐ Amazing book

⭐ Nikki Kill sees colors. Words, numbers, emotions – as a person with synesthesia, all of them come through to her as a sort of technicolor nightmare that threatens to drown out the world around her and makes it difficult for her to function socially or scholastically. One gets the impression that she’d gleefully trade places with pre-Oz Dorothy Gale, just to get a moment of mental peace and quiet. Of course, that’s before Peyton Hollis, the most popular girl in school, is found beaten near to death right after attempting to call Nikki, and it turns out that Peyton may have left clues that only Nikki’s synesthesia will help her see.And if all of that sounds ridiculously silly and gives you no real idea of what synesthesia is really like or how it could possibly help solve an attempted murder, well, too bad. That’s all you get. Well, that and a hard-smoking, hyper-violent heroine who’s equal parts damaged and overconfident. To me, Brown’s channeling a bit of Chandler here, in the sense that her heroine solves her case not so much through solid and careful detective work but by employing the Phlip Marlowe method of showing up at various places and pissing people off until someone beats the crap out of you and somehow that’s a clue…while sleeping with someone else who may or may not be one of the good guys. (Okay, so there’s a bit of Hammett in there as well.) It works in Chandler because of the sheer attitude and Marlowe’s gift for one-liners. Here, it does keep the plot moving right along, but without the zippy dialogue all you’ve got is relentless forward motion toward an ending that you’re probably not that invested in (and which you’ve likely figured out by about page fifty). All the points Brown earns for crafting a heroine who looks after herself (because every adult in her life is weirdly absent) get negated by the silliness of Nikki’s stubborn refusal to go to the police even when it’s very, very clear she’s in over her head, and the author’s main hook (synesthesia!) never gets conveyed well enough to feel like anything more than a gimmick. Apparently technicolor simply isn’t my my shade of noir.

⭐ Actual Rating: 4.5 starsThank you to Epic Reads and HarperCollins for providing me with an ARC for an honest review through the Early Readers Program.A girl who can see her senses in color due to a rare phenomenon called synesthesia. Another who was found brutally beaten in a parking lot. A phone call that brings Nikki Kill hurtling into Peyton Hollis’ world. Shade Me is a thrilling novel that is sure to take you on a roller coaster ride.Right from the start I found myself captivated by the story. The novel opens to an unnamed character waiting at a sketcky loading dock of an abandoned building. She is clearly waiting for someone. When that someone finally shows up, there are other peole with him. It’s clear right away that something is wrong. She tries to make a phone call and everything goes wrong. The opening chapter is the only chapter told from her perspective. The rest of the novel is told from Nikki Kill’s perspective. It turns out that Nikki was the girl that the girl was trying to call. However, Nikki doesn’t know that. She has no idea who called her. Nikki doesn’t have friends. She doesn’t have anyone who would call her that late at night. She gets another phone call that same night. This time it’s the hospital. They are asking her to come down and identify a Jane Doe who was brutally beaten. It turns out that Nikki’s number is the only one in the mysterious girl’s phone. When she gets to the hospital and sees who is lying in the bed, she can’t believe it. The girl is rich, popular Peyton Hollis, daughter to a big time movie producer. Peyton isn’t friends with Nikki. They don’t even know each other. There is no reason for Peyton to even have Nikki’s number. However, Nikki quickly finds that she can’t stop thinking about what happened to Peyton and is drawn into the investigation into her attack.Who wouldn’t love Nikki Kill? She’s a kick ass heroine who will stop at nothing to help a fellow classmate in need, even if it puts herself in danger. I really liked that Jennifer Brown portrayed Nikki as a struggling student who was barely hanging on to graduation. Most protagonists in YA novels are featured as straight A students who have everything going for them, but Nikki doesn’t. However, just because she is struggling in school, doesn’t mean she isn’t smart.Nikki has a rare phenomenon is call synesthesia. This means that her senses don’t function like a normal human being’s. She sees her senses in colors. Her colors are what help her figure out what happened to Peyton. At first she is simply following her gut and her colors, but she quickly realizes that Peyton may have known about her synesthesia and left her clues to follow. It turns out that there may also be a connection between Nikki and Peyton, one that she would have never imagined.

⭐ Now I know this book is not for everybody but I absolutely love and enjoy Shade Me very much. It was really a new and refreshing concept and plot that I have not read before. The writing style was very expressive and descriptive to me that I really loved and enjoy reading. And the characters was well developed and unique in there own way. Especially I really did feel connected too the main character Nikki Kill. Nikki Kill can not see the world like us because she has a rare phenomenon called synesthesia. She can hear colors, feel sounds and taste shapes and it is very difficult for Nikki too concentrate in school with her rare ability. Nikki school life is not looking so great for her she is a complete outsider from her school and she is a just a shy away from flunking out of High School. Until one night everything changes for Nikki when she received a mysterious call on her cell that lights up bright orange the color of emergencies. And she finds out that it is the local hospital that needs her help too identify a Jane Doe who is in critical condition. Nikki didn’t want to go at first but the nurse beg her to come to the hospital because she was probably the only one who can Identify the Jane Doe. Because they only found Nikki number on Jane Doe cell phone. So Nikki had no choice but to go to the hospital and identify this critical injured victim. And Ohh boy when Nikki finds out who Jane Doe really is none other than the rich and popular girl from her school Peyton Hollis who Nikki hardly knows. And which she is not a friend of Peyton Nikki is really confuse on why Peyton had her number in her cell. But one thing is clear someone wants Peyton Hollis dead. Nikki knows she should stay out of the case and let the police handle it, but she had to find out who wants Peyton dead. And that’s when things starts to twist and turn Nikki life upside down. And Nikki finds out a lot of hidden dark ugly truth in the rich Hollis family especially from Dru Peyton handsome never-do-well older brother who Nikki is really drawn too. And here is where I am going to leave it of at, there was a lot of twist and turns in the clues that left me guessing until almost at the end of the book I put the pieces to the mystery together. I am glad and happy this is a series which I am most definitely am going to continue on reading the series when the next book comes out. Because the ending left off with a lot of unanswered questions that I really what to find out the answered too. Especially to see Nikki relationship with a certain someone who grates on her nerves grow. But I have a feeling that certain someone will grow into something more for Nikki I just can tell he will be very special person in Nikki life!
