⭐In this book, Erich Fromm serves as an invited pscyhoanalyst of Freud. Although much biased, it does shed some light on the psychological basis of how Freud develops his science.

⭐Lacan (Sem. VII) summarized: “[Fromm’s text] is a strangely discordant, almost insidious work, that is close to being defamatory.” For one already grounded with an understanding of the Freudian project, Fromm’s work may prove of some use/general interest. However, I would caution one unfamiliar with Freud against turning to this text as either primer or biography. For the former, a compendium of Freud’s essential texts would prove more illuminating; for the latter, Peter Gay’s work, Freud: A Life for Our Time, stands as a firmer point of reference (I would also point toward Gay’s edited compendium, The Freud Reader, as an ideal collection of key texts). Those already inclined toward Fromm’s perspective will find here what might be anticipated.
