    Description

This tome, one in the planned series of five books in all, to be entitled UNITED STATES ARMY IN THE KOREAN WAR, is patterned after the voluminous epic know as UNITED STATES ARMY IN WORLD WAR II. Volume I covers U.S. Army action in Korea from the outbreak of war to the full-scale intervention of the Chinese Communists. It is unclear if the other four volumes, which were mentioned in the Foreword of the book, were ever completed. The narrative entails the following; In June 1950, the Korean War erupted. Four U.S. Army combat units nearest to the scene were called to duty in order to buy time until the United Nations forces could assemble the military strength necessary to take the offensive. Prior to this, these troops had been performing occupation duties in Japan but despite being seriously lacking in manpower and minimally trained and equipped for fighting, they fought desperately and heroically to delay the North Korean forces until the UN forces arrived. The opposition was then quickly crushed, only to be faced with the even more formidable opponent, Communist China. Written by Colonel Roy E. Appleman (1904-1992), who also authored several other military studies, U. S. Army in the Korean War, South to the Naktong, North to the Yalu is a vivid portrayal of the grimness of “limited war” against a fanatical enemy, and serves as an admonition to the the tragic consequences of unpreparedness and the under-estimation of an opponent, a small, little-known country. History has a tendency to repeat itself and this book poses an apropos message to current affairs in the world today.

    User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I haven’t read the full volume yet but it had a great deal of specific detail. An atrocious war thatmade me glad I served in ships and not on Korean soil.

⭐Early troop movements in the Korean War. Used it researching the 24th Div. My brother was KIA onJuly 27, 1950, three days before his 21st birthday.

⭐This Kindle Edition of this book is almost impossible to read. While it was probably a very informative book in its original form as either a hardbound or paperback book, unfortunatly the translation to the electronic version for Kindle readers completely sucks. Who ever your proofreader is, if you even used one, should be fired. I wasted my money. It would take too long to describe all the mistakes made in the translation of this book to electronic print. The only thing impressive about it was the unreadability of it.

⭐Good history in original format; but this Kindle edition is substandard.Font color, type, and size are random. Some partial words interspersed with phrases from unrelated paragraphs. Some pages shown as images. Some as both text and image.

⭐This book is a must read for students of American history. It is heartbreaking to follow the carnage of our troops who were not ready for heavy combat, or the Army who let it happen. To include the lack of decent weaponry in the first blood letting onward. The arrogance of the McArthur clique bordered on criminal negligence too….

⭐I obtained the e-book after reading the publication years ago. I was chagrined to note numerous issues with the format including illegible inserts, mismatched typefaces and other annoying issues, That said I recommend the print version as an excellent addition to anyone interested in the early, fluid phases of the Korean War.

⭐The conversion to e-book format is atrocious. By far the worst I have ever seen. The writing is bogged down in indescribable minutia. the book ends absurdly in mid air. I want my money back!

⭐The Kindle version of this book can only be described as a disgrace. The kindle version is cobbled together from the print copy and is in such terrible shape as to make it almost unreadable
