    Description

Following up the seminal Spectral Methods in Fluid Dynamics, Spectral Methods: Evolution to Complex Geometries and Applications to Fluid Dynamics contains an extensive survey of the essential algorithmic and theoretical aspects of spectral methods for complex geometries. These types of spectral methods were only just emerging at the time the earlier book was published. The discussion of spectral algorithms for linear and nonlinear fluid dynamics stability analyses is greatly expanded. The chapter on spectral algorithms for incompressible flow focuses on algorithms that have proven most useful in practice, has much greater coverage of algorithms for two or more non-periodic directions, and shows how to treat outflow boundaries. Material on spectral methods for compressible flow emphasizes boundary conditions for hyperbolic systems, algorithms for simulation of homogeneous turbulence, and improved methods for shock fitting. This book is a companion to Spectral Methods: Fundamentals in Single Domains.

    User’s Reviews

Editorial Reviews: Review From the reviews:”In 2006 Canuto, Quarteroni and Zang presented us on 550 pages a new book on spectral methods … . Now the second new book (‘Evolution of complex geometrics and application to fluid dynamics’, CHQZ3) is published and it contains further 600 pages on spectral methods. … the book presents the actual state-of-the-art of spectral methods and yields for the active researcher a nice comprehensive survey on the modern theory and an excellent bibliography.” (H.-G. Roos, Zentralblatt für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, Vol. 88 (1), 2008)”This book is … dedicated to the application of spectral methods in fluid dynamics. … the main objective of the new book is to modernize the classical spectral methods, accounting for advances in the theory and extensive application of multidomain spectral methods in fluid dynamics. … This is a very useful book for graduate students, research mathematicians, geoscientists, physicists, and engineers interested in modern methods of numerical analysis, mathematical modeling and computational fluid dynamics.” (Yuri N. Skiba, Mathematical Reviews, Issue 2009 d) From the Back Cover Spectral methods, particularly in their multidomain version, have become firmly established as a mainstream tool for scientific and engineering computation. While retaining the tight integration between the theoretical and practical aspects of spectral methods that was the hallmark of their 1988 book, Canuto et al. now incorporate the many improvements in the algorithms and the theory of spectral methods that have been made since then. This second new treatment, Evolution to Complex Geometries and Applications to Fluid Dynamics, provides an extensive overview of the essential algorithmic and theoretical aspects of spectral methods for complex geometries, in addition to detailed discussions of spectral algorithms for fluid dynamics in simple and complex geometries. Modern strategies for constructing spectral approximations in complex domains, such as spectral elements, mortar elements, and discontinuous Galerkin methods, as well as patching collocation, are introduced, analyzed, and demonstrated by means of numerous numerical examples. Representative simulations from continuum mechanics are also shown. Efficient domain decomposition preconditioners (of both Schwarz and Schur type) that are amenable to parallel implementation are surveyed. The discussion of spectral algorithms for fluid dynamics in single domains focuses on proven algorithms for the boundary-layer equations, linear and nonlinear stability analyses, incompressible Navier-Stokes problems, and both inviscid and viscous compressible flows. An overview of the modern approach to computing incompressible flows in general geometries using high-order, spectral discretizations is also provided. The recent companion book Fundamentals in Single Domains discusses the fundamentals of the approximation of solutions to ordinary and partial differential equations on single domains by expansions in smooth, global basis functions. The essential concepts and formulas from this book are included in the current text for the reader’s convenience.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐A dense text on spectral methods, but very valuable to have available on my shelf. Not where I would necessarily point a student towards first (Boyd likely wins that prize) but a comprehensive overview of different spectral techniques. Volumes 1 and 2 really should be purchased together, and I feel that the content breakdown between the two is a bit oddly organized.

⭐Excellent book, truly a piece of work

⭐Regarding the content, this is a very specialistic book. I took it as a reference for a master thesis and, hopefully, for a PhD in CFD.If you are interested in spectral methods and fluid dynamics, you can evaluate well by yourself how much this book is suitable for you.I have to complain about the material properties of this book. I underline that I bought it directly from Amazon. – First of all, the book has a white cover with blue text on it. It is completely different from the picture which represented the item I bought. Also, there is not a dust jacket, unlike I use to see on Springer hardback books. – For second, paper: it looks like poor quality copy paper. Colour figures can seen on the back of the sheet. – For third, printing: text is grey, not black, and is not very sharp. It looks like if it was printed by a poor inkjet printer. Figures appears from quite bad to ugly. Several pictures are not sharp at all, they looks like they were poorly scanned. My colour laser printer would have done a far better job. I attach a picture to show it. I cannot read labels on axis! – For fourth, binding: it is glue binded, not sewn. I use to see much more durable sewn bindings for thick and expensive hardcover books. This book seems to be printed on demand, so quality may vary a lot. But who wants to pay like 80£ for a book that could be of that poor quality? Luckily, I paid it much less.Indeed, I suggest to try to find a good sample in a bookshop,
