Morgan provides a general introduction that places Spinoza in Western philosophy and culture and sketches the philosophical, scientific, religious, moral and political dimensions of Spinoza’s thought. ⭐This is without a doubt the best $70 I ever spent. Shirley’s translation is beautifully paced and fluid: one feels in the presence of a great and kind teacher who is patient and ultimately dedicated to the passing on of knowledge and wisdom. It seems almost unbelievable that Spinoza died at the age of fourty-four. He strikes me as being the consummate scholar, but imparts what he has learned with an almost fatherly and tender mixture of enthusiasm and restraint.Spinoza deserves to be venerated alongside the likes of Aristotle, Newton, Einstein, and Sagan, as the author of what is without doubt the most humane theology ever conceived. Branded an atheist, and reviled by many, Spinoza’s work is a beautifully wrought testament to the absolute necessity of the human capacity for awe and reverence, our primal, emotional need of communion with a higher power and a sense of place, purpose and belonging. The lesson to be learned from this master teacher, Baruch Spinoza, is that understanding is the key to happiness; that a proper and rational humility, in light of our tiny presence in this grand and magnificent universe, can be a continual source of joy and peace and happiness in our lives.Physically, this book is a delight. The hard cover is rock solid and the binding perfect; the typeface is small-ish but readable, the pages are not translucent or gossamer-delicate, like my beautiful Hebrew-English Tanakh, but are sturdy and just right. I absolutely LOVE this book. I would have gladly paid twice or three times the money for it.

⭐Love having all the works in one binding. However, there are two things to note. First and foremost this translation is not used as much in the secondary literature. Second, and this might just be a matter of my taste, I think the binding feels whimsy

⭐Complete presentation of Spinoza’s work. Very nice book with nice printing and good translation as far as I can judge. Spinoza is a philosopher who is still very interesting and this is corroborated by the fact that modern scientists like the neuroscientist and humanist Antonio Damasio use his philosophy as reference.

⭐I have read Curley’s and Elwes’ translations, and Shirley’s are definitely my favorite. His translation are absolutely phenomenal and really capture Spinoza’s writing style. If you are looking to study Spinoza in-depth, I highly recommend purchasing this book. It has everything I know of that Spinoza produced: his minor essays (Emendations, Short Treatise on God, unfinished Political treatise), his major works (Ethics and TTP), his letters, and even his Hebrew grammar and his critiques of Cartesianism. The introductions for each works are something to be desired, however, and the Hackett and Penguin editions provide a bit more context. My only major complaint is that the book itself is a bit fragile – treat it with love.Any student of philosophy needs this work in their library.

⭐This is a VERY EXPENSIVE hard cover book. I was excited to receive it, but saddened by the flaws of a slice on the paper cover & the mark on the hard cover as well.I wouldn’t fuss so much if this were not $90+ dollar investment. I’m in a wheelchair I getting out to return this is very difficult for me.Can you please help me. I can live with the scratch on the book. Would it be possible to just mail me the outer sleeve? This DID NOT happen while opening the box as I tore the tape with my finger nail. PLEASE SEND ME A REPLACEMENT COVER. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR MY REQUEST. NANCY

⭐Great read…complete works

⭐Like the book. Worth the price.

⭐You’d just have to read it. 10/10 worth

⭐The complete works in one volume, in a sensitive translation: indispensible. My only regret is that the Hebrew in the Compendium is not transliterated.

⭐It is nicer having separate volumes, but this is a convenient and economical option.

⭐Excellent
