Description
Designed for a one-semester advanced undergraduate or graduate course, Statistical Theory: A Concise Introduction clearly explains the underlying ideas and principles of major statistical concepts, including parameter estimation, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, asymptotic analysis, Bayesian inference, and elements of decision theory. It introduces these topics on a clear intuitive level using illustrative examples in addition to the formal definitions, theorems, and proofs.Based on the authors’ lecture notes, this student-oriented, self-contained book maintains a proper balance between the clarity and rigor of exposition. In a few cases, the authors present a “sketched” version of a proof, explaining its main ideas rather than giving detailed technical mathematical and probabilistic arguments. Chapters and sections marked by asterisks contain more advanced topics and may be omitted. A special chapter on linear models shows how the main theoretical concepts can be applied to the well-known and frequently used statistical tool of linear regression.Requiring no heavy calculus, simple questions throughout the text help students check their understanding of the material. Each chapter also includes a set of exercises that range in level of difficulty.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐Lots of detailed derivations sometimes followed by very little explanation about the assumptions that were used during the calculation. This book is more for professors who might want to develop a course based on this book and less for learning the subject.
⭐Good textbook for class
⭐Try to get your professor to use another book, or at least pick up another one to help you through your class.
⭐This is an excellent introduction to statistical theory. The breadth of topics is exactly what I was expecting for. The style of the authors is indeed concise, which to me is an advantage. The explanations and proofs are at undergraduate level and very clearly written, not “left to the reader” or phrased in difficult notation. Most importantly the flow is impressive, it is evident that the authors have years of experience teaching this material to students. It is important however to realize this is a book for Exact Sciences majors, with good probability and calculus background. It is not for the general public, probably not for Social Science majors who are “just looking for intuition”. There is intuition here but it comes from formulae, theorems and proofs, not from waving of hands.
⭐This book is so bad. If you want to really learn statistics, please do not buy this book for learning. Because it does not help you understanding what the author said. Knowledge is invaluable and need to be pass on next generation, but not for this book!!!
⭐I taught from this book the first course in statistical theory. The textbook is excellent. This is one of the very rare cases when you can adopt a book as it is for your course without any efforts. The contents are cleverly chosen and masterly presented. Just go through the material in this text, and you’ll have a wonderful course. Recommend to any professor teaching the first course in statistical theory.
⭐I accidentally clicked on this book and it ended up being a purchase and I got charged. I did not access the content at all. The webpage wont let me return this.
