Description

Cotton Malone retired from the high-risk world of elite operatives for the U.S. Justice Department to lead the low-key life of a rare-book dealer. But his quiet existence is shattered when he receives an anonymous e-mail: “You have something I want. You’ re the only person on earth who knows where to find it. Go get it. You have 72 hours. If I don’t hear from you, you will be childless.” His horrified ex-wife confirms that the threat is real: Their teenage son has been kidnapped. When Malone’s Copenhagen bookshop is burned to the ground, it becomes brutally clear that those responsible will stop at nothing to get what they want. And what they want is nothing less than the lost Library of Alexandria.

A cradle of ideas–historical, philosophical, literary, scientific, and religious–the Library of Alexandria was unparalleled in the world. But fifteen hundred years ago, it vanished into the mists of myth and legend–its vast bounty of wisdom coveted ever since by scholars, fortune hunters, and those who believe its untold secrets hold the key to ultimate power.

Now a cartel of wealthy international moguls, bent on altering the course of history, is desperate to breach the library’s hallowed halls–and only Malone possesses the information they need to succeed. At stake is an explosive ancient document with the potential not only to change the destiny of the Middle East but to shake the world’s three major religions to their very foundations.

Pursued by a lethal mercenary, Malone crosses the globe in search of answers. His quest will lead him to England and Portugal, even to the highest levels of American government–and the shattering outcome, deep in the Sinai desert, will have worldwide repercussions.

BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from Steve Berry’s The Columbus Affair and a Cotton Malone dossier.

From Publishers Weekly At the start of bestseller Berry’s second thriller to feature Cotton Malone (after The Templar Legacy), Malone, a former employee of the covert branch of the U.S. Justice Department, is trying to lead a secluded life as a bookseller in Copenhagen. Unsurprisingly, that hope is short-lived when his son is kidnapped and his ex-wife, Pam, asks for his help in rescuing the boy. The abductors intend to force Malone to reveal what he knows about the survival of the legendary lost library of Alexandria, which may hold ancient texts that could undermine Israel’s claim to biblical legitimacy. Malone and his allies get mixed up in Washington intrigue and double-dealing as they try to identify the high-level traitor seeking to use the secret sources to change the dynamics of the Middle East. Characters implausibly leave enemies unsecured, placing themselves in unnecessary jeopardy, while the notion that the texts could have the desired effect may strike some readers as too far-fetched. Predictable plots twists (like the growing rapprochement between Malone and Pam) and superficial treatment of the issues between the Israelis and the Palestinians are further minuses. From AudioFile Erik Singer assumes the persona of Cotton Malone, former operative for the U.S. State Department, with a crisp narration. He depicts the retiree, now a rare books dealer, without any hint of his former profession. However, when Malone receives an anonymous email and learns his teenaged son has been taken hostage from his ex-wife’s home, his adventures begins anew. The ransom: he must locate the long lost Library of Alexandria, or his son will be dismembered, one piece at a time. Singer uses a versatile talent and vocal range to skillfully portray American and Middle Eastern accents as his quest leads to the highest levels of the U.S. Government. Singer captures the rising tension and tight pacing with a matching cadence that keeps listeners involved. G.D.W. © AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine– Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Reviews from Amazon users, collected at the time the book is getting published on UniedVRG. It can be related to shiping or paper quality instead of the book content:

⭐ The story moved along at a glacial pace and the characters were very underdeveloped, coming in 2nd to the author’s obsession with revealing his aha moment’ over and over again: the Bible, as it’s known today, isn’t real and has been purposely mistranslated. Duh. That’s all well and good but the author fails to follow this logic and realize ALL religious texts are simply fables, stories used to fill in the blanks science had yet to discover. Science is believing what you see; faith is seeing what you believe. I wish there had been more intrigue-type stuff and less “here’s some obscure supposition, based on other supposition, and it’ll blow your mind” stuff. It was kind of a boring read. I raced through lots of it so I’d be able to start the next Karin Slaughter book sooner.

⭐ In this second installment, Cotton is forced to work closely with his ex-wife after his son is kidnapped. It seems that one of Cotton’s past case files has come back to haunt him. This time, they’re looking for the Library of Alexandria, which contains knowledge that hasn’t been seen in millennia. Unfortunately, the discovery could be an unwelcome shock to people of many faiths. Some who are in pursuit wish to use that knowledge for their own benefit, with no regard for the consequences. Nothing is as it seems, and no one can be trusted. There are a lot of unexpected twists in this one. I love the facts from history that are mixed in with fiction, and Steve Berry really is masterful in his writing. It all blends together seamlessly. I really enjoyed it.

⭐ (My book husband) Cotton Malone is an amazing character. He is a former agent for the US government who retired and now runs a bookstore in Copenhagen. In this 2nd novel of the series he is AGAIN drawn back into his former world but this time it is because his son is kidnapped. The characters move from Copenhagen to London to Lisbon to the Sinai Peninsula and there is a great deal of political upheaval as well. Secret conspiratorial organizations as well as the Israel, US, and Saudi governments are involved. A roller coaster of a plot

⭐ I accidentally started this book at a section which stated that Israelis wipes out a whole Arab village. A total lie and shockingly insulting. I’ve enjoyed Mr. Berry’s books in the past but for sure will never read another word he writes.

⭐ I like the twists that Steve Berry incorporated as he spun this take but there were parts I just personally didn’t like or enjoy. The conspiracy was well-endowed and gripped me through the whole story. The conclusion about the librarian bothered me though. I didn’t understand why that character deserved such a pivotal and positive role.

⭐ With all the moving parts, this story needed some length for them to all come together. On the other hand, some of the repetition could be eliminated, as well as overly detailed, unnecessary backstory. Weaving the world’s acceptance of Biblical Higher Criticism and elements of Gnosticism into the story can give us a glimpse into why conflicts may exist among nations of the West and between Arab countries and others.

⭐ The book on cd has 13 discs and the first 12 were fine however on final disc, the last few minutes of the book it stopped playing. I tried wiping it off, using another player, and washing the disc but nothing worked. Very frustrating to not be able to finish this mystery.

⭐ A near superhero does a lot of global sipping around with an amazing number of people who change sides as fast as normal people change their underwear. It helps if money. Is always plentiful. There are several books in the series that proceeded my starting with this one. I will go to the first one and read them in order. That May make this one more understandable.

⭐ Steve Berry has done an excellent job with his Cotton Malone stories but this one, in particular, is exceptionally unpredictable and full of intrigue. I so enjoyed the characters, both the recurring group who show up with Cotton Malone in many of his adventures and the ones who were in just this book. I cannot see myself ever tiring of Cotton Malone.

⭐ I’ve become a Cotton Malone fanatic. So, after I read the one about Paris out of order, I’m going through the rest. I like the intrigue and the fact that I learned lots about the Middle East in this particular book.
