Description

The year’s finest writing on mathematics from around the worldThis anthology brings together the year’s finest mathematics writing from around the world. Featuring promising new voices alongside some of the foremost names in the field, The Best Writing on Mathematics 2011 makes available to a wide audience many articles not easily found anywhere else—and you don’t need to be a mathematician to enjoy them. These writings offer surprising insights into the nature, meaning, and practice of mathematics today. They delve into the history, philosophy, teaching, and everyday occurrences of math, and take readers behind the scenes of today’s hottest mathematical debates. Here Ian Hacking discusses the salient features that distinguish mathematics from other disciplines of the mind; Doris Schattschneider identifies some of the mathematical inspirations of M. C. Escher’s art; Jordan Ellenberg describes compressed sensing, a mathematical field that is reshaping the way people use large sets of data; Erica Klarreich reports on the use of algorithms in the job market for doctors; and much, much more.In addition to presenting the year’s most memorable writings on mathematics, this must-have anthology includes a foreword by esteemed physicist and mathematician Freeman Dyson. This book belongs on the shelf of anyone interested in where math has taken us—and where it is headed.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This is just a must buy book every year, it is great reading whether you are a math person or just interested in math.Honestly the description does not do this book justice, but I know they have only so much space. The 2011 edition is almost the art and philosophy edition. Yes there is the article on Escher, but there are a few other articles addressing art as well ( Lorenz and Ribbon Sculptures ).There are a few really great articles which are almost Poincare-type philosophical type essays ( really more Kant, but I never liked Kant ). And my personal favorite, mathematical models and the financial crisis.I think every year they do a great job of selecting essays for this book.

⭐- formulas in text are missing operators, special symbols are not translated correctly, etc.- other formulas come out in sort of a fuzzy gray font which makes them hard to read.- some of the figures come out too small.- text is full of those annoying dang- ling hy- phens which sug- gest to me that the text was scan- ned but never proof- read.

⭐Thumbs Up! Great Service!

⭐I bought the Kindle version and downloaded it to my Kindle (4th generation), and the mathematical formulas are missing parts (eg. subscripts), which basically makes the book useless in this form. Amazon should not be selling this.

⭐Never having been strong in math but always with a keen appreciation for and appetite to understand, I was thrilled to come across this book. It’s uniquely different in its layout, approach and selection of mathematical topics encompassing a wide range of subject areas. It possesses just enough depth and detail to stimulate and entertain but not overwhelm. The writing is clear and lucid with a relaxed reading style more enjoyable than in many math related texts I’ve encountered. I feel the author, Mircea Pitici should be applauded for developing a great idea and performing a service to society by sharing the beauty and elegance of mathematics in such an approachable format.

⭐An excellent read; many of the articles are intelligible to me (not a professional mathematician)I enjoyed the 2010 edition as well and look forward to the 2012 edition and many more in the future.

⭐I bought this book after reading the previous of the series named “The Best Writting on Mathematics 2010”. Contrary to the 2010’s book, “The Best Writting on Mathematics 2011” has a smaller variety. Most of the articles in it are about philosophy and history of mathematics and mathematical education. I am not in position to judge the quality of the aricles, maybe they are of excellent quality. But not being interested in those fields I found them a little borring. The mixture of the articles is not right.I read “The Best Writting on Mathematics 2010” from cover to cover but only a few selected articles from “The Best Writting on Mathematics 2012”. And I certainly will not pre-order “The Best Writting on Mathematics 2012”!

⭐Great!

⭐This is a terrific series in mathematical writing. All accessible to the layman. Most of the articles I found extremely interesting. Som just interesting. All in all a deserved 5 starts. Also read the other years : all the same quality….
