Description

This volume provides a thorough account of the critical tradition emerging with the modernist and avant-garde writers of the early twentieth century (Eliot, Pound, Stein, Yeats), continuing with the New Critics (Richards, Empson, Burke, Winters), and feeding into the influential work of Leavis, Trilling and others. The book provides a companion to the other twentieth-century volumes of The Cambridge History of Literary Criticism, and offers a systematic and stimulating coverage of the development of the key literary-critical movements, genres, and individual critics.

⭐This admirable volume will give you an extensive overview of the lit crit of the 1940s and 50s. Different hands contribute essays and, of course, some are more insightful than others.I think the essay on Lionel Trilling is particularly good, whereas the one on Leavis (by Michael Bell) is a bit overdrawn, dragging in Heidegger, a writer Leavis would surely have dismissed as a German windbag. The rest of the volume offers the same contrast: great views and occasionally misguided ones.I prefer the earlier History by Rene Wellek, who at least offered you his own point of view, not this kind of congeries of multiple visions. Still, it’s good stuff for those interested in the subject.
