Description
This book brings together Erich Fromm’s basic statements on the application of psychoanalytic theory to social dynamics. At the same time it offers an image of man consonant with the hopes of radical humanism. The Crisis of Psychoanalysis is a collection of nine brilliant essays. Although his work is deeply rooted in Freudian theory, Fromm further develops Freud’s doctrines by including both social and ethical dimensions and applies his discoveries and insights to address the problems we face in society at large.

⭐Wonderful book….second chapter, I believe, is the first occurrence of someone revealing Freud’s famous, or infamous, suppression of his child seduction bombshell back early in his career, not to be spoken of again until the bombshell book “Assault on Truth” came out in 1984 that gave all the details of this notorious display of cowardice on Freud’s part.

⭐I recommend this book for the post-script really, I have read it a total of three times now and I do think that there is an alternative title (very hard to get, at least at an affordable price) called “The Revision of Psychoanalysis” rather than “The Crisis in Psychoanalysis” which I generally consider the superior of the two books (although it is a product of Fromm’s disputes with Marcuse and former colleagues of the “Frankfurt School” of Social Research). This book contains a number of essays, some of which are not the most easy reading I’ve ever encountered, on Marx, Freud and Fromm’s own ideas about how social and cultural factors mattered to the future of psycho-analysis.However, I recommend this book mainly for its post-script or afterword by Fromm, while relatively short this is one of the few places that I have read, pretty much in summation, Fromm outline his perspective as a whole. It discusses Fromm’s Bibliophile Versus Necrophile theory, his attempt to develop Freud’s later thinking about a Death Drive/Instinct and sort of extreme categories of personality/character.I have read some academic essays suggesting that these “polar opposites” are, to use a sports analogy, the “track and field” upon which some of Fromm’s “lesser” personality typologies, ie hoarding, exploiting, marketing, authoritarian, “compete” or “perform” upon. In part, I think of this type of extrapolation or evaluation as an attempt to reconcile these “extremes” with Fromm’s other “social character” theorizing and sociological determinism.A lot of the fundamental theorizing is contained here in though, especially of the “life versus death” drives, plus Fromm talks about “death lovers”, I think it is, at one point and it amused me to think of this as kind of close to the “Death Eaters” of Harry Potter’s fictional universe. The whole book is worth a read but the post-script/afterword alone would make it worth it.
⭐Is one of those great books have ever written by ERICH FROMM,the book analyzing who you are and whom they are, deeply analyzing the anatomy of current mentality in our societies around the world.Anyone who concern about the destructive way of thinking and acting in this insane world and think a revolutionary change is urgent to save the only life we know from madness and destruction should try to read this wise book.
