Description

The Mongols formed one of the finest armies ever known–and when they swept across the Danube on Christmas Day 1241, the west lay at the mercy of these “horsemen from hell.” From a wealth of contemporary sources comes the story of these soldiers, and especially of Subedei Bahadur, the illiterate military genius who brought 20th-century warfare to Medieval Europe. A fascinating examination of their tactics and training–good enough to invent strategies that Rommel and Patton would later use to such devastating effect–proves the Mongols were more than mere barbarians: they were martial masterminds of the highest order.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐The author labors under many of the long debunked cliches and fantasies about medieval warfare. He is convinced that western military tactics were backward and “unimaginative” as he states, which is nonsense. Basically, he adopts the Charles Oman delusions in regards to western warfare, which historians now consider a punchline. Western strategy was very much advanced, and there was nothing simplistic about it. Most absurd is his description of the use of infantry, which was highly advanced, especially in theaters of the Crusades. Essentially, the author is entirely ignorant when it comes to western aspects of the period. His summary of the Crusades is laughably absurd and would elicit roars of laughter from a room filled with Crusades specialists. Don’t bother with this book.

⭐I like to read about periods in human history that are like gray areas in my knowledge. This book is a pretty quick read and explains the Mongol’s invasions of Europe form their point of view and the Europeans’. Not a lot of details about weaponry or even tactics, but plenty of discussion about the individual leaders on both sides. I banged this one out and now I know who they were and how they affected Europe. I recommend it if you want that kind of quick summary.I only gave it four stars because I did not want anyone to think that this is the be all and end all of books about the Mongols. It is what it is.

⭐Apparently book was used. I would’ve liked to have known that before my purchase.

⭐The world was poised to be Asian dominated in 1240. It all turned on a dime. The power of the Mongol horde was awesome and no one in Europe was able tostop it. Chambers goes into great detail in explaining the chaos that was Europe inthe 13th Century and how they were unable to deal with the inevitable doom soon tobe visited upon them. Only a fluke event saved Europe from total destruction at thehands of the Mongols. Read this book and find out how Europe managed to remain Europe.

⭐A rare combination. An informative, yet highly readable book about the greatest Army in history, and the greatest general that led it, Sabotai, in the ONLY successful attack on Russia in history. And that’s just the opening of the greatest campaign, the Mongol invasion of Eastern Europe.Chambers also provides a precis of the destruction of Khwaresm, and Genghis Khan’s earlier history. A must read!

⭐Very informative. Well-researched. Loved the detailed battles the Mongols waged.

⭐it was ok

⭐Well written. Interesting jnsightd into Mongolian values/outlook and European reactions to them.

⭐This is a history of a period overlooked by many western European countries when the Mongols threatened all of Europe with their invasion in force of Russia, Poland and Hungary. At the core is the campaign between 1237 and 1242 when those three countries were devastated, and the detail of this is chilling and compelling. This is how I like a history book to read; easy to follow and not get bogged down in lecture-style bombast, such as university-type offerings from Roger Collins for example. This is the sort of book those who might like history should read in order to satisfy their interest, rather than try to forge through the turgid offerings for those who like ‘evidence’ of everything and then waffle on for four pages or more as to how this is justified in their view. The excellent BBC book ‘Storm From The East’ about all the Mongol histories, borrowed much of the text from this book on that part of the Mongol tale. This is very much recommended to all.

⭐Very well written and informative. Couldn’t ask for anything else from it.

⭐I found the book very interesting and full of facts that I was unaware of.

⭐I like that book. Thank you
