Description
Secret societies, famous scientists, ancient Egyptian mysticism, and a fascinating addition to the god-versus-science debate: the Catholic Church. By the bestselling authors of The Templar Revelation and Mary Magdalene, The Forbidden Universe reveals how the foundations of modern science were based around a desire to destroy the church. The great pioneering scientists of the Renaissance and the early Enlightenment (including Copernicus, Galileo, and Sir Isaac Newton) were fervent devotees of the philosophical/mystical system of Hermeticism. Many of the most important scientists of this age, including Galileo, belonged to a secret society called the Giordanisti, which had the agenda to overthrow the Church and establish a new age of Hermetic supremacy.

⭐This book offers an interesting perspective on what was the ” enlightenment” from a hermetic viewpoint. I gave the book four stars because it is decidedly and enthusiastically pro-hermetic in its bias. I am one who thinks the hermetic texts may be Greek dating late CE out of Alexandria, not ancient or Egyptian in production. Nevertheless, the authorship and scholarship appear to be solid, and the little tidbits about Rosicrucianism etc. are interesting (though again speculative in places). I have a strong belief in the skullduggery allegedly committed by secret societies and am not so easily convinced of their separateness from the universal church. Certainly in modern times they are not separate. A book such as this seems not to take the inquisitions seriously enough for my taste, often quipping about the dangers of Rome rather than being rightly disgusted. Fifty million victims of tyranny is nothing to be quippy about.I bought the book to learn about the hermetic influence in science, and this book treats the subject pretty well. I was wondering about the alchemical beginnings of chemistry, for instance, and why the number 33 kept popping up in physics. Interesting.
⭐The first half of this book explains the importance of ancient Hermetic knowledge in the birth of science. An early scientific pioneer, Giordano Bruno, was burned at the stake by the Catholic Church for suggesting that the stars were other suns, and were surrounded by planets populated by other beings. In an era when most people believed the sun revolved around the stationary Earth, and stars were God’s lamps hanging in the sky, Bruno’s idea was blasphemous and led to his gruesome execution. But where did Bruno get such a revolutionary and insightful idea? From the Hermetica–a collection of texts that originated in ancient Egypt and were attributed to the legendary Hermes Trismegistus. The Hermetica had an enormous influence on scientists like Kepler and Galileo–men revered by modern scientists–but it is rarely mentioned in discussions of their lives and work. This well-documented book explains why.But it’s the second half of the book that is likely to upset the proponents of the brand of atheistic/reductionist/neo-Darwinian scientism currently in vogue among academics (and Dawkins, Gould, Hitchens, and the like, if they deigned to lower themselves to read it, will find this book infuriating). The authors collect a wealth of information from renowned physicists, biologists, and cosmologists that points to the possibility of a universe imbued with meaning and a built-in evolutionary momentum towards propagating consciousness. This is by no means a Creationist argument, but one based upon current scientific data, a nuanced understanding of evolutionary theory, and well-established tenets of quantum physics.Since the 70s, it has been fashionable to explain quantum physics and other mind-bending scientific developments with metaphors drawn from Eastern spiritual traditions. And rightly so, as those systems provide metaphors that can help us understand the complex and often illogical conclusions of quantum science. But as the authors of this provocative work point out, the West also has an ancient tradition that can serve as a guide in understanding the universe and the role of conscious beings within it–the Hermetica. And it’s time to blow off the dust from some of these ancient books and bring their knowledge to the light of day once again. This book is an excellent start.
⭐The authors do a very thorough job of making their point concerning how Science has a lot to owe Hermeticism as a huge part of that institutes foundation.I found this to be a very fascinating read concerning the history of Hermeticism as well as its key figures in history.A very well rounded read that isn’t boring in the least and makes its argument a very string one based on numerous sources.Be prepared for a fun ride!
⭐Picknett and Prince have a long record of research and publishing in esoteric subjects. They were an important source for several of Dan Brown’s best sellers “Angels and Demons” and “The DaVinci Code”. In this book they reveal the amazing and nearly unknown influence of Hermetic writings that were “rediscovered” just before the Renaissance. While the provenance of these writings have always been controversial, the authors make a very convincing case that the core knowledge can be traced back to Ancient Egypt. There should be no controversy, however, about the influence of these writings on Copernicus, Galileo and Newton, and, subsequently, on the Enlightenment. After tracing and re-tracing the various occult groups spawned by these writings, Picknett and Prince turn to modern Cosmology and Particle Physics, positing that the universe is organized around what many have called the “Anthropic Principle.” This part of the book is so detailed and complex that it defies any simple summary, but the following quote from Freeman Dyson, a British-born American theoretical physicist is a good start: “The more I examine the universe and study the details of its architecture, the more evidence I find that the universe in some way must have known we were coming. There are striking examples in the laws of nuclear physics of numerical accidents that seem to conspire to make the universe habitable.” Not exactly “Intelligent Design” the way creationist ideologues might wish, but not at all the kind of random mutation we associated with Darwin. Again, too much detail to summarize, but, trust me, plenty of radical food for thought.Highly recommended!
⭐How these two authors rendered such an interesting subject so dull is beyond me. I lasted forty pages.
⭐I thought I knew a bit about the history of science. All the books I read and taught from now seem shallow and insipid. While people haven’t been burned at the stake recently, more subtle penalties still exist for those who choose what they believe. This book will either excite or raise the ire of readers. Heretic or believer in others beliefs, the question remains.
⭐Book was in good shape. Shipping fast.
⭐How many cultures have disappeared before modern times and how many pre civilizations existed before known ancient civilizations?
⭐Consciousness raising look into the connection between today’s science and the ancient wisdom of Hermeticism. Hoping the authors can follow up on the idea of how the feminine principle could bring our world back into balance.
