    Description

Renowned psychoanalyst Erich Fromm investigates the universal language of symbols, expressed through dream and myths, and how it illuminates our humanity. In this study, Erich Fromm opens up the world of symbolic language, “the one foreign language that each of us must learn.” Understanding symbols, he posits, helps us reach the hidden layers of our individual personalities, as well as connect with our common human experiences. By grasping the symbolic language of dreams, Fromm explains, we can then also understand the deeper wisdom of myths, art, and literature. This also gives us access to what we, and our society, usually repress. Fromm shares the history of dream interpretations, and demonstrates his analysis of many types of dreams. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Erich Fromm including rare images and never-before-seen documents from the author’s estate.

    User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐After ‘Human Destructiveness’ and this, I’ll never waste time on Fromm again. He’s illogical, unscientific, incredibly boring, his grammar sucks, and he’s almost entirely always off the topic that (see, Fromm, that’s where you use the word ‘that’ and not ‘which’) the book is ostensibly about. And he squanders way too much space slagging off other work, evidently merely for his own ego-gratification. He’s a dick. Here’s one example of his thinking: he actually, in all seriousness, spends space in this book, and the reader’s time, trying to rationalize how the dreaming Pharaoh might have synthesized the famine prediction from unconscious data/experience, rather than being divinely inspired. WTF? This is Genesis. It was invented. There is no need to try to explain it in natural terms, Fromm. What a tedious slog it is getting through these pages, trying to squeeze just a drop or two of value out of the dry, repetitive pulp you threw so much good money at. Here’s what I learned from this book: that ‘crossing a river’ symbolizes a transition. I honestly wasn’t aware of that. It resonates with me because I (unconsciously) used that image, at an appropriate juncture, in one of my novels. So that was interesting. But not worth 263 God-awful pages and the fifty bucks and hours of wasted time it cost me. This book is an effing disgrace and should be avoided at all costs.

⭐Interesting book with lots of professional dream interpretations of Freud and Jung and less of Fromm himself.

⭐Fromm is better known for his works on social psychology such as “Escape from Freedom,” but this is a little gem in the field of dream analysis. It also goes beyond dreams to discuss the meaning of myths, rituals, and symbols in general. Highly recommended.

    ⭐Good book and ask written.

    ⭐Very Good

⭐I have read only a small portion of the book on dreams and found it valuable and stimulating..charles Roth

    ⭐Good!

    ⭐great

⭐Not exactly what I expected from a basic analysis of nursery rhymes. It’s actually more a psychology of dreams. Intersting though.

    ⭐Heavily marked book
