Description
After its publication in 1967, The Foundations of Scientific Inference taught a generation of students and researchers about the problem of induction, the interpretation of probability, and confirmation theory. Fifty years later, Wesley C. Salmon’s book remains one of the clearest introductions to these fundamental problems in the philosophy of science. With The Foundations of Scientific Inference, Salmon presented a coherent vision of the nature of scientific reasoning, explored the philosophical underpinnings of scientific investigation, and introduced readers to key movements in epistemology and to leading philosophers of the twentieth century—such as Karl Popper, Rudolf Carnap, and Hans Reichenbach—offering a critical assessment and developing his own distinctive views on topics that are still of central importance today. This anniversary edition of Salmon’s foundational work in the philosophy of science features a detailed introduction by Christopher Hitchcock, which examines the book’s origins, influences, and major themes, its impact and enduring effects, the disputes it raised, and its place in current studies, revisiting Salmon’s ideas for a new audience of philosophers, historians, scientists, and students.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐I first bought this book in the paperback version and found it to be well-written and informative. I was a little disappointed with the Index at the back of the book because when I wanted to find passages I had read before, it was difficult to locate them. So I bought the Kindle version of the book believing I would be able to use the Search function to find the passages I wanted. Unfortunately, at this time the Kindle version does not support the Search function. I feel like I’ve wasted my money. I cannot imagine why anyone would publish a Kindle version that doesn’t support the Search function.By the way, I have not yet completed the book or I might have rated it five stars.
⭐Very clear, a necessary reading for anyone interested in Hume’s problem of induction.
⭐Excellent book!
⭐It is difficult to write a review that does justice to how good this book is, when my views are in such stark disagreement with that of the author’s. Nonetheless, this is a great book. Wesley Salmon, student of Reichenbach, fleshes out the currently accepted model of how inferences are drawn in science. The book is, pound-for-pound, one of the best reads in all of philosophy of science. Salmon begins with Hume and takes off from there, exploring everything from what causality is to statistical inferences from the works of Reichenbach and Kolmogorov.Great read! Very Enjoyable! Must Read!
⭐If you are thinking of reading this book, start with the ‘introductory essay’- and see picture. If this makes sense to you, perhaps this book is for you. It sounded like a simple short book to establish a grounding in this topic. Unfortunately the book assumes a grounding in the arguments and language of logic – perhaps a student of the philosophy of science and logic might understand it, but not a mere doctor. There also seem to be a lot of long words to explain relatively simple principles – and harping on it. Haven’t got past the second chapter – perhaps it gets better but I am tapping out now.
