Description
Endymion, Pelops, Daedalus, Pygmalion what are the stories behind these and the hundreds of other familiar names from Greek mythology names that recur throughout the history of European culture? In a two-volume work that has become a classic reference book for both the serious scholar and the casual inquirer, Robert Graves retells the adventures of the important gods and heroes worshipped by the ancient Greeks.Drawing on an enormous range of sources, he has brought together all the elements of every myth in simple narrative form, supplying detailed cross-references and indexes. Each entry has a full commentary which examines problems of interpretation in both historical and anthropological terms, and in the light of contemporary research.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐Well-written, gives you a sense of the imense and tangled web of myths and stories and beliefs that haunted the ancient mind. Also, it very clearly conveys the often humorous and sometimes brutal venality of the gods. If you read Homer, Herodotus, or the tragedians, you feel as if the gods are this layer of petty middle management standing between mortals and fate – sacrifices to them are equivalent to TPS reports – and this book gives you a sense of that. However, avoid the footnotes or the introduction – the hypothesis that the Greek myths describe the transition from Neolithic matriarchy to Bronze-age patriarchy. The jumble of mis-interpreted anthrology and sloppy philology that Graves uses to back his crackpot theories is infuriating and borderline offensive to people who carefully study the ancient world. Also, the presentation of the material could be better organized. But, on the whole, this book gives you a sense of how the ancient mind really worked.
⭐The book itself is 5 stars but they’re are a number of typos – a common issue in many Kindle books.
⭐The great classic of Greek mythology, along with Bullfinch. Graves knowledge & expertise are unequalled. At the same time, his fixation with the idea that godess worship underlies all human religious activity colors his analysis to the point of rendering it suspect. Scholars must read this book. The lay person is perhaps better served by Hamilton, or even the original works themselves.
⭐The book points to the essence of the Greek myths at various levels – the spiritual level of the mysteries, the metaphysical level of Greek philosophical speculations, the historical background as far as we know today, the social level of anthropological studies. The book should be considered a starting point for anybody with interest in Greek myths and Greek culture in general.
⭐Outstanding!!! The stories are there, and the background explanations will drive you nuts,,as well as intrigue you no end!!! Good,,comprehensive history in the backgrounds!!! Please, keep, the romance and the history separate!!!
⭐Nice read. Fast shipping.
⭐I have the to Claudius books, and I have enjoyed them so much. I wish I had the PBS series. He’s inspired my love of Ancient Rome!
⭐The product description is incorrect. The kindle edition only contains Volume 1, ending with Myth Number 104, “The Death of Theseus”. I can’t seem to find Volume 2 in the kindle store.
⭐Useful as a reference book to look up summaries of the various Greek mythical stories and suggested interpretations but not as fascinating or provocative as The White Goddess. The presentation comprises a brief summary of each mythical story. Variants of the characters names are offered and attributed to regions and historical regions. Conjectural origins of the myth are offered, usually as the supplanting or evolution of a local cult following conquest by rival tribes, or migration and merger of communities. The presentation is somewhat bare bones and thus somewhat dry, making this more of a reference book than a retelling the stories for modern readers. Thus some of the archetype magic is lost. The current editions contain some revisions by the author of his original theories concerning the myths.
⭐At £4.62 overall price with an original price of £7.99, this was quite expensive for its quality – yellowing pages and cracked and faded spine. Not what I would describe as “good” quality when compared with other secondhand books purchased online.
⭐Very informative and I am reading it off and on as it is easy to forget who is married to who etc
⭐As a casual studier of Greek Myths I find this really really simple to read and enjoyable, I LOVE this book, So fantastic.
⭐very pleased
