⭐This book gives something of a survey or lay of the land with respect to Gothic authors and themes. The first part of the book gives a survey of a number of Gothic authors: Dickens, King, Lovecraft, Poe, Rice, Shelley, Stoker and others. Though, if I’m being quite honest, even though the list of authors seems pretty well rounded, the descriptions of the authors seems perhaps lacking. Often it’s more of a very brief personal description of their life and times, but without any particular literary analysis and only a glossed over brief overview of some of the titles of their work. I had hoped for something a bit more substantial in terms of the content, themes and impact of their works. It seems that, on looking closer, each entry in the book is written by a different author / scholar. Hence a variability in coverage that might not have happened had a single person authored the entire book. In that regard, this seems a survey of essays by various folks compiled into something like an anthology. The next section covers a large swath of the themes, devices and genres of Gothic fiction (alphabetically arranged): the abject, the demonic, the fantastic, the grotesque, monstrosity, the supernatural, the sublime, transgression, the uncanny, cyberpunk, gothic fairy tale, gothic romance, gothic sci-fi, horror, urban gothic, gothic architecture, gothic body, gothic music, etc. Many of the entries are a paragraph or two. About a half to a full page. A couple entries are slightly longer. but, again, these tend to be overly general synopses with perhaps a couple examples of titles or authors that used the particular trope, plot devices or theme. The final section treats the various regional ‘gothics’: American Gothic, German Gothic, Japanese Gothic, Russian Gothic, Southern Gothic, Anglo-Caribbean Gothic, etc.A couple of later appendices give further reading lists, examples of Gothic films and gothic-related web sites.Overall it seems a pretty worthwhile book. Perhaps not as exhaustive as I’d hoped. But an adequate survey of the Gothic landscape to get the feet wet and learn some of the vocabulary with which to go about furthering one’s study of the topic.,
