    Description

In recent years, the remote kingdom of Bhutan has increasingly attracted the attention of the world. In 2008, it emerged as the world’s youngest democracy and crowned the world’s youngest monarch. Today, it continues to enchant the rest of the world with its policy of Gross National Happiness and has become a popular travel destination. But despite its growing popularity and the rising scholarly interest in the country, Bhutan remains one of the most poorly studied places on earth.Karma Phuntsho’s The History of Bhutan combines both traditional perspectives and modern academic analysis and tells the full story of Bhutan for the first time in the English language. Primarily a historical account, it also includes substantive discussions of Bhutan’s geography, culture and society to give readers an incisive introduction to the country.

    User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐A timely and very well written text that speaks to an intricate history of this small country. A history of entangled relationships with Tibet, the author makes it very clear that in terms of identity it is wrong of the west to conflate Bhutan with Tibet. The relationship with India and the rest of the world as Bhutan finds complete independence under the monarchy is also a most fascinating part of this history. There is much more that could be said, but anyone wanting an insiders view of what it might mean to be Bhutanese and even that claim does no justice to the complexity of that country.

⭐Only part way into this book. I bought this for my own information on this beautiful country. Very interested in this people and culture.

⭐Very good work of investigation.Guven the level id details covered, and variety and complexity of names, may be a bit if a challenge to follow the sequence at times

⭐A detailed, accessible and thoroughly researched work of scholarship that cuts through the mystery and magic of the “Happiness Kingdom” to describe how a people, struggling for centuries against invasion, religious wars, oppressive taxes, slavery and ruthless strongmen, emerged in the late 20th Century an island of good governance with unparalleled environmental ethics while surrounded by a sea of nations swamped in corruption, dysfunction and environmental disaster.

⭐A great book for all who loves Bhutan and wishes to learn more about its history. Allthough in part a little academic and sometimes difficult for a person without prior experiences with Tibetan history and the different monastic schools. But definatley a tresure for anybodey who wishes to expand and deepen their knowlage about the contry the people and its history.

⭐Excellent history from a competent source. This book is designed for someone who wants to study in depth about Bhutan. Not for a light reader.

⭐Thorough, fascinating. Excellent preparation for travel to Bhutan. So much would be missed without this background.

    ⭐Amazing history — well conceived but 600 + pages!

    ⭐Good book
