Description
In 1922 Barnes Wallis, who later invented the bouncing bomb immortalized in the movie The Dam Busters , fell in love for the first and last time, aged 35. The object of his affection, Molly Bloxam, was 17 and setting off to study science at University College London. Her father decreed that the two could correspond only if Barnes taught Molly mathematics in his letters.Mathematics with Love presents, for the first time, the result of this curious dictat: a series of witty, tender and totally accessible introductions to calculus, trigonometry and electrostatic induction that remarkably, wooed and won the girl. Deftly narrated by Barnes and Molly’s daughter Mary, Mathematics with Love is an evocative tale of a twenties courtship, a surprising insight into the early life of a World War Two hero, and a great way to learn a little mathematics.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐This book was very inexpensive, so I am not returning it, but you should adhere to standard description standards. The back cover and last pages as well as the front cover and first twenty pages were clearly creased. That is not as described: “The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. ” Be honest and you’ll get 5 stars.
⭐A great book to help you find even ground in mathematics
⭐An ABSOLUTE MUST for anyone interested in math and its development through history.
⭐However, I wish there were a companion volume on the mathematics of history.View tips and guidelines | 8 more words required.
⭐I have been teaching history of mathematics for some years and this is in my view a highly valuable, interesting sourcebook in this field. It is also modern when compared to other sourcebooks. IN particular the authors often provides the reader with different, sometimes contradicting interpretations of the sources, which is both exciting and instructive. Some of these texts also give the reader a sense of the (sometimes) very low reliability of the extant sources, an aspect often ignored in other books on the same subject. A warning: the authors give a minimal amount of explanations in short headings for each chapter; therefore readers -especially beginners- should not expect to find in it a historical narrative. At best it can serve to illustrate such a narrative. Or, in other words, it shoud be read with one of the classical histories of mathematics.
⭐* PhysicalThe book is printed on high-quality paper and is well bound. The fonts used are of an ok size for people with specs.* H.N.D, undergraduate, post – graduate? In my humble opinion, this book is a final year topic on a Hons math level. A Mathematical professor I used to know who taught a similar course syllabus as this book covers said: “… it’s surprisingly relevant…”.* What’s attractive about this book?To be honest, its cultured interests of certain topics and rejection of some topics. Such as the planetary models, Newton and Euclid being personally more interesting. The description of Greek geometry, conics is ok if you mentally take it slowly to follow it and I can just about cope! The influence on later works is encouraging to take in. The many translations into English take the time and cost. The earlier works take up a lot of pages.* SummaryThe coverage of areas is impressive, but even some of this can be dull. Maybe it’s me not being smart enough?
⭐Price reasonable thorough text
⭐I’m very satisfied.
⭐I find this book fascinating. The primary sources – letters, articles, excerpts of published papers etc are incredibly interesting to me, a secondary Mathematics teacher approaching the end of a forty-year career. I’ve worked at schools that had copies in their libraries and so have always been able to dip into it when I wanted to. Now I’ll be able to look up items at any time as it will be part of my personal library.
⭐Would definitely recommend this book, it was recommended to me by my university tutor. It is perfectly linked to the university course i am studying and is helping me greatly. The book is also perfectly priced.
