Description

Originally published in 1847, History of the Conquest of Peru, a companion volume to William H. Prescott’s masterly History of the Conquest of Mexico, continues his vivid chronicle of Spanish exploits in the New World. The book’s commanding vision of Pizarro’s tumultuous overthrow of the Inca empire has secured its reputation as a classic in the literature of Latin American history.’History of the Conquest of Peru represents an author’s triumph over his materials,’ observed Donald G. Darnell, one of the historian’s several biographers. ‘Prescott exploits to the fullest any opportunities for dramatic effects that history might provide him. . . . If there is one [distinguishing] feature of the Conquest of Peru . . . it is the portrayal of the Spanish character, that striking fusion of courage, cruelty, pride, and gallows humor. . . . We seem to be overhearing dialogue and observing firsthand the interaction between the Spaniards as they struggle for control of an empire. . . . Although Peru lacks a noble protagonist . . . it is still an immensely readable history. The description of the Inca civilization, particularly its wealth, the precise explanation of the cause of the conflict between the conquerors, and the depiction of the Spanish character–these together with the careful research, the sheer abundance of anecdotes, and the exploitation of primary materials all contribute to the history’s continuing popularity.’

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Although I had read this book years ago in college, I had forgotten what a witty and humane author Prescott was. This is history as I wish it was all written. I didn’t remember that the footnotes are in the middle of the text and not all of them are translated from the Spanish and French, which is slightly annoying. I feel kind of silly writing a review of a book as well known and respected as this one but for what it is worth, I highly recommend it.

⭐My father had a 1961 Version, paperback, but the print was very very small. Which was fine for the $.75 he paid for it. So I bought this hardcover version with larger print. The book I received had only books number one and two from Prescott’s abridged and revised edition. Too bad I finished Book 2, long after long after the Amazon return period expired. As other reviewer‘s have mentioned it was a pretty poor pirated copy although there is no copyright. This really pissed me off!

⭐Five stars because I learned so much about Peru and the ancient Inca culture during the mid-1500’s. The conquest was deceitful and brutal. The country and especially Cuzco, the ancient city, were far more interesting and meaningful when I later visited. The Spanish stole all of the gold and sent it back to Spain while slaughtering the indigenous people and destroying most of their highly developed civilization . I must confess that I pretended to spit on Pizzaro’s tomb when I toured the site. Coco Diva’s mom

⭐Excellent!

⭐I HAVE HAD A CHANCE TO READ IT BUT TODAY I AM . ALSO I GAVE THE SECOND COPY TO MY FRIEND!

⭐This seems to have been some poorly produced pirated copy. It started on page 13 and we had to return it.

⭐none

⭐A wonderful book! It reads like great fiction but the events aren’t fiction– they actually happened! This book kept me captivated, I couldn’t put it down! Prescott does a marvelous Job!

⭐An absolutely fascinating account of the conquest of Peru. You also learn a great amount about the views and attitudes of the 1800s (in which the book was written).

⭐Wonderful piece of writing!!! it is a shame that they no longer use such sophisticated language. I strongly recommend it to anyone who’s interested in the subject.

⭐Reasonably quick delivery, only took a week and excellent condition, was slightly worried when the book was described as “good” but it is practically like knew, very good for the price paid

⭐This book was written in the 1850’s by an author who spent years reviewing all the available records in the National Archives from Spain. As the author had previously done a similar book on the conquest of Mexico, he can place things in their historical context. The references are most complete. To fit such a work in one book, the editor has used a very small font and there is basically no figure. When you go over this, it is one of the best books I have read.
