Perhaps most important, Yu has made changes to the translation itself in order to make it as precise as possible. ⭐Anthony Yu grew up hearing the tales of Monkey. While with the University of Chicago he decided to translate this masterpiece, preserving the verse and as well as the prose sections of this classic work. One of the great pieces of Chinese literature (along with Dreams of Red Mansions, Three Kingdoms, Outlaws of the Marsh, etc.). The verse will be stiff at times (Chinese verse into English is always a challenge), while references will easily escape a Western audience, it is still enjoyable for the many adventures, philosophical leanings and even comedic elements that give this classic a timeless feel. For all it’s flaws there really is no better translation into English.

⭐The funny stories present in the first two volumes are almost nowhere to be found in this one (there is one). Moreover several of the stories revolve around sun wukong simply not bothering to inform his allies of the opponent’s special items and abilities.The good:*settings and cultural differences between the human regions are well written.* The stories themselves are varied in plots.* Anthony Yu’s notes are invaluable for readers who are not eastern culture buffs.The bad:* The demons vary very little exept for in appearance. One demon sounds and acts almost identically to the next.* Tripitaka is still very annoying.* When sun wukong finally comes across a worthy challenge a bodhisattva is almost instantly introduced to resolve the situation.* Characters become feeble or genius level tactician and super slueth to fit the needs of the original author.

⭐Nothing

⭐This is the third volume of Anthony C. Yu’s four-volume translation of the Chinese classic, “The Journey to the West.” The story continues to be fantastical, violent, and, despite its episodic nature, surprisingly compelling to me. I was reading the previous volume in parallel with Ken Liu’s “The Wall of Storms.” Once I started this third volume, I decided to shelve Ken Liu’s book in favor of Tripitaka and Pilgrim’s continuing adventures. For a Chinese classic published over four hundred years ago, the content is far less elevated and far more entertaining than I’d expected. Consider, for instance, this edifying quote, “Even a fart is additional air!” I am now impatiently waiting for Amazon to deliver the final volume.

⭐This is a wonderful translation of one of the Chinese classics. Don’t be intimidated by the length, I never tired of the antics of the original Gang of 4. I felt like I had to pick this series up after seeing so many TV sets in Viet Nam with monkey and pig guys flying around on them, and I’m glad I did.

⭐I have many translations of this Chinese classic, as well as the original Chinese version. If you want a real feel for this story, you cannot go wrong with this version. Yes, it is long, but so is the original. If you are looking for a very condensed, but well done version, I would also recommend the Arthur Waley translation!!

⭐It’s not what you’d imagine from a journey novel. Challenges are overcome less so with violence and more with good ol’ trolling. Fun to read!

⭐Although the footnotes sometimes get onerous, they really are necessary for a complete understanding of the culture and content behind this book. I recommend this, and all the other volumes in this series by Mr. Yu, to anyone interested in the culture, history and/or Tao! Well worth reading.

⭐I bought this series for my son, hope he enjoys reading this book.The translation is excellent, it is pity that the size of the letter is too tiny, my son lost interest to continue…hope to have a large printed one.

⭐Just about every chapter ends on a cliff hanger, urging you to read on to find out what happens. Though this is quite a long novel, spread here over four books, it never gets boring.

⭐These books, all four are very good read. Very entertaining and kept me occupied for a long time.Written in very simple English.
