⭐I bought David Bentley Hart’s “A New Translation” and N. T. Wright’s “The Kingdom New Testament” to compare their insights. They are having a public argument over the value of each other’s translation. However, they are both trying to do different things with their translation, so they read very differently.N.T. Wright is a Christian historian and he wants to help the reader hear the writings as the 1st Century Christians heard them. For example, what did they think when “Lord” was used when addressing Jesus? N. T. Wright suggests that they hear ‘king’ in competition with the Roman emperor. N. T. Wright’s version is clear and helps one understand the flow of the New Testament. In that, it is a good translation. I liked it.David Bentley Hart is a Greek Scholar of ancient Greek writings and he wants the reader to see the Greek as it was written. He translates the clumsy Greek writing into clumsy English. He translates as transparently as possible. However, there are not headings to guide your reading as in Wright’s translation. This is because the Greek manuscripts have none. Hart wants you to experience the Greek. He has some wonderful essays in the appendix that clarifies his most important choices in translation.So they want to do different things with there translations. I believe that David Bentley Hart’s translation will be the more influential translation. It will actually influence other translations, because of his high scholarship in Ancient Greek. I now enjoy going to Hart’s translation, because it is getting me to see new things in the New Testament (I have read about 10 different English translations) with NRSV being my favorite mainline translation.I recommend Hart’s over Wright’s for it’s startling translational clarity. However, Wright’s is a good New Testament for smooth flow of reading.

⭐This translation has the very positives and negatives that just about any single-person translation of the Bible has: It carries too much of the author’s bias. When Wright is on target, the translation is wonderful. For instance, so much of Acts and the Gospels are beautifully written and a joy to read (especially for quick reading of large passages). I especially enjoyed the maps throughout Acts to help the reader mentally track along.However, when it comes to Paul’s letters, Wright’s serious error of translating righteousness as ‘covenant faithfulness’ distorts the very gospel message itself by incorrectly defining such a key term. 2 Corinthians 5:21, one of the clearest passages on double-imputation, is altered beyond recognition by Wright. Instead of “in Him we become the righteousness of God” he has “In him we embody the covenant-faithfulness of God.”If you’re a fan of the New Perspective on Paul, you will love this translation. However, I believe the NPP has sadly distorted the gospel in a serious kind of way.

⭐I am an NT Wright fan, read much of his work, admire his theology. This translation just doesn’t cut it in my opinion. There is so much that is sacred to me, the Gospels are sacred. To me, this volume dumbs down the greatest story ever told. The language is not appealing. I know people like simplicity, this is too simple, the English used simply does not fit the Man we know and have faith spoke those words or something with the meanings portrayed. Very disappointing. Clearly written for an American millennial audience. What’s the American word for Rubbish?Above was my review when I first purchased the book and started to read it. . Having carefully read this translation with an open mind, walking around my house, reading, and praying, this translation is absolutely beautiful. I was wrong and my apologies to Dr. Wright. A work of art, I mean that!

⭐This is a review for the book not the translation. I’m shocked at the lack of quality of this book. This is a New Testament and it’s as cheap as a book can get. I had it shipped to friend who recovers bibles and so the cover is amazing, but the quality of the paper is a one out of five stars.

⭐Wright’s New Testament translation is useful if one is seeking a reference NT to compare with other translations. However, I was disappointed in that given his stature as a New Testament scholar he would have taken more pains to document why he made translation choices (wording and phrasing): For example, in the main instances where he departed from using key Christian terms (familiar from committee translations) he did not document with footnotes what Greek terms he was translating in unconventional ways. This is very important for the reader to be aware of in order to make assessments about his interpretative decisions. The translation is very attractive in that it is quite readable. For anyone who has an interest in detailed study of the New Testament can be a useful tool for reference.

⭐Please take note, this is not a paraphrase. NT Wright has been working for a very long time on this actual translation.This was translated with real intent: To bring the gospels and letters alive in the lives of the the Body of Christ here and now. To do this, it took a lot of rewording without losing any punch.I find this translation to be incredible useful with my little girls. Reading the gospel accounts to them has never been with so much ease. Seldom to I have to think through the wording to help them understand the teachings we’re looking at. Other than a few funny British phrases, this New Testament speaks OUR English.Paul’s letters come alive with especial vigor. I’ve always had a tough time with Paul, but reading this version brings it to life. I often find that I can’t put it down, and am more convicted than ever before.I feel that sometimes we need a fresh translation to reinvigorate our minds toward the good book so that it’s not stale in our minds.Nothing is watered down here, in fact, there’s many passages that I’ve had a tougher time taking in and applying to my life because they’re so much clearer and convicting than ever before in my life.

⭐It is such a joy to read the scriptures again with fresh eyes. I am studying theology and this contemporary translation has helped me see the scriptures again with a new understanding. This is very definitely a translation, not a paraphrase. The translation has been made by the highly respected Theologian, N.T. Wright. I cannot recommend this new translation highly enough.
