Description
Another scintillating collection of brilliant problems and paradoxes by the most entertaining logician and set theorist who ever lived. — Martin Gardner”Smullyan is not your run-of-the-mill puzzlemeister; he polishes up old chestnuts, spins variations on a theme, and peoples his logical world with a delightful cast of characters.” — Science 82″I believe Ray Smullyan to be the Lewis Carroll of our times. His little books of logic puzzles will be remembered long after most of us are forgotten.” — Peter Denning, Chairman of the Computer Science Department, Naval Postgraduate School”You may experience small frissons of delight as you follow Smullyan into the dizzying heights of Gödel’s proof and the very nature of proof, truth, and logic in mathematics.” — Kirkus ReviewsDiscover scintillating new perspectives on the principles of mathematical logic with this puzzle treasury. Inspired by the classic tale of a prisoner’s choice between two doors, these whimsically themed challenges allow readers to base their decisions on logic rather than luck. Nineteen chapters advance from relatively simple puzzles and meta-puzzles to highly complex paradoxes involving probability, time, and change. The author, a well-known philosopher and magician as well as a celebrated mathematician and logician, was acclaimed by The New York Times as “a master at translating difficult ideas into stories and puzzles that require no formal background, only patience and a passion to learn.”

Editorial Reviews: About the Author Raymond Smullyan received his PhD from Princeton University and taught at Dartmouth, Princeton, Indiana University, and New York’s Lehman College. Best known for his mathematical and creative logic puzzles and games, he was also a concert pianist and a magician. He wrote over a dozen books of logic puzzles and texts on mathematical logic. Raymond Smullyan: The Merry Prankster Raymond Smullyan (1919–2017), mathematician, logician, magician, creator of extraordinary puzzles, philosopher, pianist, and man of many parts. The first Dover book by Raymond Smullyan was First-Order Logic (1995). Recent years have brought a number of his magical books of logic and math puzzles: The Lady or the Tiger (2009); Satan, Cantor and Infinity (2009); an original, never-before-published collection, King Arthur in Search of His Dog and Other Curious Puzzles (2010); and Set Theory and the Continuum Problem (with Melvin Fitting, also reprinted by Dover in 2010). More will be coming in subsequent years. In the Author’s Own Words:”Recently, someone asked me if I believed in astrology. He seemed somewhat puzzled when I explained that the reason I don’t is that I’m a Gemini.” “Some people are always critical of vague statements. I tend rather to be critical of precise statements: they are the only ones which can correctly be labeled ‘wrong.'” — Raymond Smullyan Critical Acclaim for The Lady or the Tiger:”Another scintillating collection of brilliant problems and paradoxes by the most entertaining logician and set theorist who ever lived.” — Martin Gardner
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐I have bought this book several times, as gifts for others and for myself. It starts with a number of pretty easy puzzles to get the mind thinking about things in the right way, then the puzzles get more tricky, but are still based in the fundamentals of logic. Smullyan clearly loves what he does, and his somewhat nerdy passion comes across brilliantly in this book. His explanations to each puzzle are extremely thorough and orient the reader to think about things correctly for future puzzles in the book. I have taught logic for several years and would recommend this book to anyone interested in developing their reasoning skills in a fun, interesting way.
⭐I was expecting to read many different logic questions, each being a paragraph long (or, perhaps, two or three paragraphs long). The book starts off that way, for just a few questions. Then the book goes into long stories, which is not my cup of tea.Not that the stories are not a challenge. It simply is not stated anywhere in the advertising, nor on the back cover, that that would be nearly the entire book’s challenges.Cheers!
⭐As a writer, I am suddenly working with PhD’s, mathematicians, logicians, physicists, and whatever. This book is really helping my brain to be more logical (did I say I am a writer, an artist, not a math type person?). I am really forced to think, and to use logic. I love this book.
⭐This book is a true gem.The progression of the difficulty is quite good, and the way the logic problems are introduced in the form of riddles that are part of a bigger story keeps you interested on it.I totally recommend it.
⭐Good book for testing logical abilities, but somewhat repetitive in its exercises.
⭐You need a sharp mind to the get the right answers, I enjoyed it.
⭐I teach gifted 4th – 6th grade children and the logic puzzles are just what they need to develop strong thinking skills. I was pleasantly surprised how many good puzzles were found in the publication.
⭐Good books
⭐I used this book long ago, translated in Russian with my kids to have some fun and to improve their logic thinking, now I will use it with my grand kids.Great book!
