Description

Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity leads to two remarkable predictions: first, that the ultimate destiny of many massive stars is to undergo gravitational collapse and to disappear from view, leaving behind a ‘black hole’ in space; and secondly, that there will exist singularities in space-time itself. These singularities are places where space-time begins or ends, and the presently known laws of physics break down. They will occur inside black holes, and in the past are what might be construed as the beginning of the universe. To show how these predictions arise, the authors discuss the General Theory of Relativity in the large. Starting with a precise formulation of the theory and an account of the necessary background of differential geometry, the significance of space-time curvature is discussed and the global properties of a number of exact solutions of Einstein’s field equations are examined. The theory of the causal structure of a general space-time is developed, and is used to study black holes and to prove a number of theorems establishing the inevitability of singualarities under certain conditions. A discussion of the Cauchy problem for General Relativity is also included in this 1973 book.

User’s Reviews

Editorial Reviews: Review “…an excellent set of reviews of some of the most exciting areas of research in gravitational physics…I have not found a comparable compilation of valuable information on the current status of general relativity.” American Scientist Book Description This 1973 book discusses Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity and its predictions concerning black holes and singularities in space-time itself.

⭐I really liked it

⭐This is an advanced level text and an irreplaceable classic that is certainly not for beginners. The authors take a differential geometric viewpoint to explain GR and the explanations of the mathematical background are complete and deep. Moreover, this is also a standard reference for the Cauchy problem in GR, which happens to be written by the very person who first proved it’s well-posedness. There is a book by Roger Penrose titled, “Techniques of Differential Topology in relativity”, which has major overlaps with this book. I would recommend any serious relativists to get that one too since some of the proofs given in it can never be found elsewhere and moreover, it pairs well with Hawking-Ellis’ text.Much of the well-known exact solutions to the field equations’ physical meaning are deeply explored and what is probably most special about this book is that it extensively uses global analysis as compared to say MTW, Wald, and Weinberg, all of which rely heavily on perturbative methods. Overall, I would say that it’s well worth its price and a must-have for an advanced graduate and/or specialist in the field. Although the book is self-contained, the text would definitely not suit beginners since there are very little to no explanations on some of the mathematical theorems the authors employ and also largely due to the fact that there are no exercises.

⭐I used this gem as a text at the University of Waterloo quite a few years ago. For me, it was a life changer. I won a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship to study stellar atmospheres and was doing that at University of Washington when I first read this outstanding work.Although my interests were certainly germane to the large scale structure of the cosmos, I suddenly felt limited in my work. I think this book was the impetus for my change of focus. I devoted myself to general relativity from then on. I found the authors’ singularity theorems most exciting. I also believe my extensive training in “pure” maths allowed me to more deeply appreciate the format and style presented here by Hawking and Ellis.I highly recommend this book to anyone with the necessary mathematical and physical prerequisites. This not an elementary text.

⭐Excelente estado del libro y muy rápido el envío. El servicio entregado por DHL es muy bueno. Con respecto al contenido del libro, es un buen libro para introducirse al aprendizaje de los agujeros negros. Excelente libro de Hawking y Ellis.

⭐Got book within time and quality as stated.

⭐Hard read. Makes my head hurt in a good way.

⭐It’s a professional book.

⭐A classic.

⭐A classic. I learnt my initial graduate level differential geometry for General Relativity from this book, and still refer back to it now.

⭐It is good to go back to the sources. Pauli’s is a bit awkward for me, but Wald’s points to this one so much. Very clear and concise. Very nice drawings too.

⭐Sehr schnell geliefert und das Buch hat gute Qualität wie beschrieben.

⭐Good quality of the book
