Description

For 700 years the Meks served without complaint; they were indispensable, for no gentleman would demean himself with toil. ⭐ Amusing little novella about human hubris and self-regard, and the revolt of other species’ reduced to slave labor. The author’s efforts are focused on using stilted language and quirky word excavated out of Websters. For a story that is about division of labor as domination the author doesn’t show much insight into what various protagonists actually do, and how they experience their function in this rigid caste system. Worth a quick read, but could have been a much better story.

⭐ Though set as science fiction, it’s philosophical views transcends times, epochs. Excellent perspectives on the essence of morality, and significance of one’s life

⭐ In the far future, Earth has become too civilized to even acknowledge the revolt of an alien slave race that soon has the last castle on the planet surrounded. A great Vancian look at an exotic culture with his trademark ironic view of human nature. Highly recommended!

⭐ Excellent seller, very pleasant buying experience from start to finish! Could not have been better.

⭐ Good political adventure story. As with most of Vance’s books, the highlight is his descriptive writing style in creating the scene and the characters.

⭐ Good story about one race enslaving another. The arrogance of the enslavers (humans) almost caused their complete destruction when the enslaved (Meks) rebelled. Fortunately, the humans took their heads out of their butts just in time to save themselves and agree on a fair compromise that both parties could live with (this usually doesn’t happen in conflicts). It was funny to watch to humans attempt to win an unwinnable war. They knew the Meks did all the real work and had all the knowledge of the devices used. The Meks had sabotaged almost everything the humans tried to use against them. Yet, they persisted in their arrogance almost to the end. Few would help the humans because they had been screwing just about everybody for generations; they did not forget and turned their backs.Even though this was written in the different time (the 60’s), it is still applicable today. There are a number of class/race conflicts that are headed the same direction…

⭐ Replaces beloved lost book.

⭐ Read this story as a child and it somehow impressed me. Glad I found it here. The story itself is a nice and easy read with some interesting ideas about human nature. Not so far spun as it seems

⭐ A great metaphor for leaving necessary action until it is too late. Short read in a classic Jack Vance world.

⭐ It’s a good read
