Description
If people are endowed with a “number instinct” similar to the “language instinct” — as recent research suggests — then why can’t everyone do math? In The Math Gene, mathematician and popular writer Keith Devlin attacks both sides of this question. Devlin offers a breathtakingly new theory of language development that describes how language evolved in two stages and how its main purpose was not communication. Devlin goes on to show that the ability to think mathematically arose out of the same symbol-manipulating ability that was so crucial to the very first emergence of true language. Why, then, can’t we do math as well as we speak? The answer, says Devlin, is that we can and do — we just don’t recognize when we’re using mathematical reasoning.

⭐I am a psychologist and picked up this book to understand learning difficulties in mathematics as my I am planning my post-doctoral research in that area. I liked the depth of subject matter and the insights given by Keith Devlin. Understanding the different skills involved in mathematical thinking helped me a lot. In fact, I registered for a course conducted by Keith Devlin on Mathematical Thinking Ability.I would recommend this book for anyone who is interested in understanding the evolutionary and cognitive origins of mathematical thinking and ability.
⭐I just received it today so I have not had time to read it. But there is a weekend coming. I am sure I will like it a lot.Thank you
⭐The book had a sticker on the spine from the seller I guess, but easily removed without any residue. The book has very light shelf wear shown on the bottom, but really, any reader would be happy with it’s condition. Also shipped immediately 🙂 Thank you.
⭐I tried…. But it felt like I was eating unbuttered toast.
⭐Devlin again. Just buy it. You’ll be happy you did I am sure. Of course there is a math gene. It is too valuable a quality not to be locked into the genes for safe passage. This is one of my favorites.
⭐This book is very eye-opening. Tells about the origin of math and how it applies to EVERYTHING. This is a very unique math book. If you have curiosities…this one will intrique you.
⭐I learned of this book while searching for a book Keith wrote that was recommended on Coursera.com. This Prof. has turned me on to a love of Math.
⭐excellent!
⭐Really enjoyed reading it, great book for those interested about math or enjoy reading of the quantitative nature.
