Description

Everything You Need to Know about Mathematics for Science and EngineeringUpdated and expanded with new topics, The Mathematics Companion: Mathematical Methods for Physicists and Engineers, 2nd Edition presents the essential core of mathematical principles needed by scientists and engineers. Starting from the basic concepts of trigonometry, the book covers calculus, differential equations, and vector calculus. A new chapter on applications discusses how we see objects “mathematically” with the eye, how quantum mechanics works, and more.A Convenient, Student-Friendly Format Rich with Diagrams and Clear ExplanationsThe book presents essential mathematics ideas from basic to advanced level in a way that is useful to both students and practicing professionals. It offers a unique and educational approach that is the signature style of the author’s companion books. The author explains mathematical concepts clearly, concisely, and visually, illustrating how scientists use the language of mathematics to describe and communicate physical principles.Be sure to check out the author’s other companion books:The Materials Physics Companion, 2nd EditionThe Physics Companion, 2nd EditionThe Electronics Companion: Devices and Circuits for Physicists and Engineers, 2nd EditionThe Chemistry Companion

User’s Reviews

Editorial Reviews: Review “The book summarizes basic notions of mathematical methods for physicists and engineers in a schematic way. It is aimed both at science students and physicists who need a quick handy reference when they have to solve a specific mathematical problem.”―Applications of Mathematics, 60, 2015Praise for the First Edition:”This is an interesting and useful little book … .it is very well done, and everything that might be expected to be there is there … . The book might also be invaluable for those undergraduate students in Mathematics, Science, or Engineering, who need to undertake first- and second-year courses in Mathematics, and it will serve those who wish to have quick access to all those formulae that seem to be so readily forgotten.”―Australian Physics, March/April 2006

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐The book itself is great. I require it in several physics courses I teach. However, it apparently is NOT compatible with a kindle. I have to read it on my iPad or laptop.

⭐Recommended. Great Product. Quick shipping.

⭐This is not meant for any advanced physics student or professional physicist/engineer. It is an overview meant for the undergraduate physics and engineering student who has encountered basic multivariable calculus and differential equations. I am currently pursuing physics and have found this to be the best reference text for all of my classes with explanations that cover the physical, geometric and methodological applications necessary to apply to undergraduate-level problems. If one needs a specific topic covered in more depth, I would pursue a more rigorous text in the specific area of interest (e.g. Dover books on complex variables, P.D.E.s, etc). Otherwise, this is plenty suitable for those who have taken the sophomore level math classes required for their engineering and/or physics degree.

⭐This book is great as a reference and quick-refresher of fundamental mathematics taught in undergraduate engineering and physics degrees. It has all the important topics as well as some interesting additions such as solid mechanics and quantum mechanics, plus numerous examples. Highly recommend if you want a good reference book that does not weigh 10 pounds.

⭐This book is one of the most useless mathematical handbooks (“Companions”) that I ever saw. It is nothing more than an ill-explained, very short and confused ‘explanation’ of what can be found in nearly any mathematical handbook. It is NOT a “companion” that will give insight here and there, but rather, a 302 page terse statement of underlying principles without even the briefest explanations of those principles. A much, much better choice is, Applied Mathematics for Engineers and Physicists: Third Edition (Dover Books on Mathematics.) It’s 1040 pages (for the same price) gives explanations and physical techniques and insights that the physicist or electrical engineer needs in his/her work. It even has problems with selected answers! As a 65 year old research physicist, I have seen and used many books in my career. And certainly, this will not be one of them! I am returning it to Amazon today for a refund.
